Rafael Nadal on Wednesday was forced to shelve his plans to return to action at next week’s Qatar Open, admitting he is “not ready to compete”.

The 37-year-old missed most of last year with a hip injury sustained at the Australian Open before making his comeback at last month’s Brisbane International.

Nadal puts return on ice, admits ‘not ready to compete’

However, a small muscle tear then forced the 37-year-old to pull out of this season’s first Grand Slam in Melbourne.

The 22-time Grand Slam title winner now hopes to return to the tour at the Indian Wells Masters in California from March 6-17.

“I would have loved to play in Doha, where the tournament team, as well as the amazing Qatar fans have always supported me greatly,” Nadal said in a statement on X.

“Unfortunately I am not ready to compete and I won’t be able to come to Doha where I really wanted to be and play again.

“I will focus on keep working to be ready for the amazing Indian Wells tournament.”

Nadal was named on the entry list last month for the Qatar Open, to be held February 19-24, and where he was champion in 2014.

Earlier Wednesday, the former world number one, whose ranking has plummeted to 646, admitted he had been suffering “some discomfort these past few weeks and I’m a bit on the limit”.

“At this point every blow I take, every injury, is a setback not only in tennis and physically, but also mentally,” he told La Sexta television.

He added: “I am 100% confident of being in Indian Wells, it’s a very special tournament for me. I don’t know if it’s going to be the last time I play in it, so I would like to be in Indian Wells, for sure.”

Nadal reiterated that his “main goal is to try to get to the clay season as healthy as possible, to at least give me the chance to enjoy this part of the season”, which the Spaniard has dominated in his career.

He has won a record 14 French Open titles and holds an astonishing 112-3 win-loss record at Roland Garros.

Nadal won two matches in Brisbane in January after a year on the sidelines but felt pain in his upper left thigh during a quarter-final loss to Jordan Thompson.

Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas revealed in an interview with Marion Bartoli some interesting details about their relationship, including who initiated the first kiss and who said “I love you” first, among other things.

The couple started dating in May 2023 and is celebrating their first Valentine’s Day as a public couple. Both tennis players participated in a video where they answered questions with closed eyes, sharing intriguing details about their relationship.

This week, Badosa took part in the Qatar Open and delivered a strong performance in the first round against Ashlyn Krueger (6-3, 4-6, 6-4) before falling in the second round to former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez (6-0, 2-6, 3-6).

Her boyfriend, Stefanos Tsitsipas, was seen supporting her from the stands, and together they took part in an interview with former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli, revealing amusing details about their relationship:

Bartoli: “Who send the first message?”

Badosa “Him,” the Spaniard laughingly said.

Tsitsipas: “Rome – second round against Ons Jabeur. I remember the message clearly. I said, clinical, great tennis out there, what else…”

Badosa: “Like, [he said] amazing performance. And I just finished the match and I saw it, and I was like, ‘Paula, wait for an hour, play it tough.’ Five minutes and I replied,” she laughed. “Very weak.”

In another moment of the interview, Bartoli asked, “Who said I love you first?” and quickly, Badosa pointed her finger at Tsitsipas, saying, “Him.” The Greek former world No. 3 accepted that he made the first move and said, “I did.”

The tennis legend is proud of her flaws and promotes body positivity after giving birth to her two children.

Serena Williams may have been away from the professional tennis tour for a long time, but that has not taken the spotlight away from her. The mum-of-two continues to draw attention for her appearances and entrepreneurial endeavors, and now she has decided to use her platform to promote “self love” and “body positivity”.

The tennis legend took to social media platform Instagram earlier this week to share a photo of herself in a white bikini, proudly showing off her post-partum body. Williams posted the photo on Monday, featuring herself and her second daughter, Adira Ohanian. It has to be noted that Williams gave birth just six months ago, meaning she is not yet back to her pre-pregnancy body.

Nevertheless, it is hard to miss the fact that Williams still has the enviable physique of a top athlete. The 42-year-old looks great, and mentioned in her caption that one does not need to be perfect to feel good about themselves.

In the caption, she said: “Loving yourself is essential. I find that I have to remind myself of that self-love through all different stages in my life. Right now I love that my body is not picture perfect. I love that I smell like milk – that milk sustains Adira Ohanian.”

Williams confirmed that she is breastfeeding her daughter, something which is a massive challenge in itself as can be confirmed by mothers around the world. She then went on to speak about how much her body has changed throughout her motherhood journey.

“I love getting to know a new version of my body. It is a change, but it’s a change that has been well worth it. So start this week, knowing that you are loved, and that starts with you,” she said.

While Williams sounds at peace and completely positive now, she admitted during an interview with Vogue back in 2020 that she had issues with body positivity throughout most of her life, including during her massively successful tennis career.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion had a strong built ever since she entered the professional circuit, and she also had a flashy fashion sense. It would be hard to believe that she was not confident and comfortable in her own skin through all those years, when she was seen as something of a fashion trailblazer on court.

Her revelation came at a time of her life when she was getting ready to move on to another chapter. She had married Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian back in 2017, and in the same year welcomed their first child, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.

At that time, she was not yet ready to give up tennis, and was back playing at the French Open in 2018. It was an amazing feat especially after she revealed that she had a very dangerous delivery. She had to deliver Olympia via an emergency C-section, and had to undergo another surgery due to blood clots in her lungs, a complication of the pregnancy.

It was a life-threatening birth, which makes it all the more meaningful that she had dared to have her second child. This time around, the birth went relatively smoothly. However, she still has a lot to deal with when it comes to bouncing back and dealing with post-partum depression.

Speaking of the state of depression that mothers experience after having babies, she told Harper’s Bazaar: “I think people have to talk about it more because it’s almost like the fourth trimester, it’s part of the pregnancy. I remember one day, I couldn’t find Olympia’s bottle and I got so upset I started crying… because I wanted to be perfect for her.”

Williams retired from professional tennis in 2022, and is now happily managing her business ventures and being part of a family of four.

  • Lexi Thompson in hunt for first win in Aramco Saudi Ladies International Presented by PIF
  • Spanish star Carlota Ciganda and Thai sensation Trichat Cheenglab confirmed
  • Aramco Saudi Ladies International Presented by PIF set for 15-18 February 2024

This year’s Aramco Saudi Ladies International Presented by PIF boasts a star-studded field of Major winners, Solheim Cup heroes, and golf’s rising stars as Lexi Thompson, Carlota Ciganda and Trichat Cheenglab top the billing.

Lexi Thompson Famous Golf Star is Single or Married?

As Riyadh continues to become the Kingdom’s cultural and sporting hub, the Aramco Saudi Ladies International Presented by PIF will make its debut in the capital. The event continues to set the standard globally with a prize purse of $5 million USD, which equals the payout of the men’s PIF Saudi International. This marks a significant milestone in golf, as it stands as the largest event to achieve pay parity between the men’s and women’s equivalent competitions.

Major winner Lexi Thompson narrowly missed out on the chance to lift the Aramco Saudi Ladies International Presented by PIF trophy in 2023. Two-time Major winner, Lydia Ko, finished two shots ahead of Thompson to seal the title as the American finished T3, alongside Lilia Vu and Manon De Roey.

No stranger to performing under pressure, Thompson was thrust into the limelight at just 12 years old, when she became the youngest player to compete in the US Women’s Open. The American will tee it up in Riyadh with her eyes set on the Kingdom’s most prestigious women’s golf title, and her third Ladies European Tour (LET) win.

On returning to Saudi Arabia, Lexi Thompson remarked: “The Aramco Saudi Ladies International signifies a significant step forward in advancing the sport, not just in Saudi Arabia but on a global scale, and it’s a privilege to be part of an event that advocates for equal prize funds in golf.

“My determination is stronger than ever to exceed my 2023 finish and secure my first Aramco Saudi Ladies International title, this time at a new course for me, and a new city in Riyadh.”

Thompson will be joined in the field by Solheim Cup rival, Carlota Ciganda, the Spanish sensation who had an unforgettable 2023, recording a T3 finish in the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and sinking the winning putt in her home country to retain the Solheim Cup title for Team Europe.

Golf Saudi ambassador Carlota Ciganda looks to replicate her previous triumph at Riyadh Golf Club

Back in October, Ciganda led her team to victory at the Aramco Team Series Presented by PIF – Riyadh with a staggering –43 at Riyadh Golf Club and is now looking to add a first Aramco Saudi Ladies International Presented by PIF trophy to her impressive collection, which includes the Aramco Team Series Presented by PIF – Florida individual trophy.

With an eye on achieving even more in 2024, Carlota Ciganda said: “Riyadh Golf Club holds a special place in my heart, especially after leading my team to victory at the Aramco Team Series presented by PIF – Riyadh. Now, stepping back onto this course, I’m eager to channel that same energy and aim for another triumph.

“The continued prize fund equality with the men’s event is a testament to Golf Saudi’s commitment to elevating the game and driving pay parity across golf. This sets the stage for a future where gender equality in golf is not just an aspiration but a reality, and I am proud to be part of an event that advocates for equality in golf.”

Emerging Thai star, Trichat Cheenglab, joins the events roster after cementing her name on the LET in her first season on the Tour last year. The Race to Costa del Sol champion and Rookie of the Year 2023 will challenge the world’s best at her first Aramco Saudi Ladies International Presented by PIF event.

Carlota Ciganda DQ'd from Amundi Evian for signing incorrect scorecard

Trichat Cheenglab, the 2023 LET Order of Merit winner, expressed: “Joining the lineup is an honour, and I am excited to compete at my first Aramco Saudi Ladies International. It’s a prestigious event with a prize fund that is driving conversations in sport forwards. I am here to make my mark, learn from the best, and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of women’s golf in Saudi Arabia.”

The Aramco Saudi Ladies International Presented by PIF remains at the forefront of setting new benchmarks in the golf world, exemplifying Saudi Arabia’s ongoing commitment to fostering the growth and global recognition of women’s sports. The stage is set for the sport’s best to engage in a fierce competition to claim the historic prize purse.

The world of gymnastics has been graced with iconic moments that continue to captivate us, leaving a mark on the sport’s history. From Nadia Comaneci’s Perfect 10 on Bars at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal to Simone Biles achieving Biles II at the 2023 World Artistic Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, and many others, these iconic moments have stood the test of time.

Adding to this prestigious list is a routine performed by a former artistic gymnast from UCLA at the NCAA championships years ago. This routine combined athleticism with artistic finesse and left a lasting impression on the gymnastics world, including the most decorated gymnast ever, Simone Biles.

A floor routine that went viral
In 2018, at the Pac-12 Championships, UCLA’s Katelyn Ohashi delivered a “Thriller” quite literally when she performed a floor routine that stunned the world. The routine featured songs like “Thriller” and “The Way You Make Me Feel” by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. With her unparalleled skill and infectious energy, Ohashi garnered a remarkable score of 9.95 out of 10, igniting the crowd to their feet in applause.

The next year, Ohashi once again performed the routine at UCLA’s gymnastics season opener on Jan. 5 and repeated it on Jan. 12 in a UCLA versus Cal showdown that earned her a perfect 10. And this score was repeated once more when Katelyn Ohashi performed the routine on Feb. 10 at a meet against Washington. Since then, Ohashi’s Michael Jackson-themed floor routine has become a viral sensation and still stands as one of the most iconic floor routines in college gymnastics. Did you know it was so iconic that it was even applauded by Simone Biles?

How Simone Biles applauded Katelyn Ohashi
In 2019, Simone Biles gave an interview with Olympics.com and discussed her plans after the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. She shared that she had planned to headline a national tour in the United States following her participation in the Tokyo Olympics. This tour was called “The Gold Over America Tour,” and Biles shared how she would visit 35 cities across the country, including major cities like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and her hometown of Houston. While speaking of her plans, Biles mentioned that the tour will include former UCLA gymnast Katelyn Ohashi, who gained fame for her viral floor routine.

She shared, “She made her mark, She put college gymnastics and gymnastics … back on the map.” As we reflect on the excellence exemplified by athletes like Ohashi and Biles, fans eagerly anticipate the unfolding of the 2024 Olympic year. With each new competition, they hope to witness blazing performances that push the boundaries of gymnastics even further. Who are you rooting for this year? Comment below!

McGregor posted a new video of him sparring that drew praise from Bridges but fans told him to choice a training partner that will actually hit back

Conor McGregor’s latest training video sparked praise from close friend Ebanie Bridges – but some of his fans didn’t share the same sentiment.

The UFC legend is gearing up for his highly-anticipated comeback fight against Michael Chandler but is still without a date despite being announced over a year ago. McGregor has been posting more training footage of late compared to last year and the likes of his teammate Kiefer Crosbie and UFC star Paulo Costa praised him for looking “sharp” in the clio.

World champion boxer Bridges commented flame and love heart emojis whilst boxing legend Evander Holyfield wrote: “Ok then”. Some fans questioned McGregor’s sparring partner in the clip with one comment reading: “Stop sparring yesmen and get someone that tries to hurt you.”

“He needs more sparring partners that will actually throw punches at him, because these guys ain’t it,” a second comment read. “Why don’t you actually spar an actual UFC fighter? For example, go train with Khamzat, I remember him inviting you to train with him,” another user wrote. “Conor needs to spar guys who actually want him to get better not some yes men,” a final comment read.

McGregor was ineligible to fight for most of last year having dropped out of the USADA drug testing pool after breaking his leg. The Irishman re-entered the testing pool last October but the UFC have since cut ties with USADA to launch a new testing program with Drug Free Sport. McGregor moved closer to his comeback fight by providing two samples to the organization last month.

Assuming that McGregor doesn’t fight until late summer, over three years would have passed since his last fight. McGregor and Chandler were pushing for their fight to take place at UFC 300 in April, but head honcho Dana White insisted the Irishman is unlikely to fight until autumn.

Chandler said of his fight with McGregor: “I want battlegrounds of epic proportions, I want to stand in the cage with that man, I want to break that man’s will, I want to break his jaw. I want to separate him from consciousness, completely flatline him inside the octagon, and then we say farewell to the sport’s biggest star. Then we can go about our merry way.”

World number one Iga Swiatek reached the Qatar Open quarter-finals for a third successive year on Wednesday as fellow four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka also made the last eight without hitting a ball.

Swiatek, the two-time defending champion at the Gulf event, defeated 14th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-1, 6-4.

The Russian battled bravely, saving four match points in the 10th game of the second set before Swiatek came through.

Moving on: Iga Swiatek on her way to victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova

The 22-year-old Pole will face another two-time Doha champion, Victoria Azarenka, in Thursday’s quarter-finals.

Former world number one Azarenka beat eighth-seeded Jelena Ostapenko 6-0, 6-3 for her third win over the Latvian this year.

Swiatek now has a 11-1 record in Doha, with her lone loss at the tournament coming to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the 2020 second round.

Osaka advanced earlier Wednesday after Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko, who beat fourth seed Ons Jabeur in round two, pulled out with an elbow injury.

Osaka will meet another former world number one, Karolina Pliskova, for a place in the last four as the Japanese star continues her comeback following maternity leave.

The 26-year-old is through to her first WTA quarter-final since reaching the Miami Open final almost two years ago.

Pliskova, who won her first title in four years in Romania last week, fought back from the brink of defeat to overcome Czech teenager Linda Noskova 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Noskova served for the match up 5-4 in the second set before the wheels came off against two-time Grand Slam finalist Pliskova.

Leylah Fernandez knocked out Australian Open runner-up Zheng Qinwen 7-5, 6-3.

Chinese fifth seed Zheng let slip a strong position in the opening set where she led 5-3, as Fernandez broke twice in a row and reeled off the final four games.

Fernandez then punished a loose service game from Zheng in the sixth game of the second set before closing out an impressive victory.

“I’m extremely pumped up, I’m super happy with my level. There’s still a lot of work to do, but so far so good, so we’re just going to keep going,” said Fernandez.

World number 38 Fernandez, a former US Open finalist, goes on to meet third seed Elena Rybakina for a spot in the semi-finals.

Rybakina withstood a spirited fightback from 16th-seeded American Emma Navarro, winning 6-1, 6-7 (6/8), 6-4.

The Kazakh had a match point in the second set tie-break but the in-form Navarro, this year’s Hobart champion, forced a deciding set.

Rybakina broke for a 3-2 lead and saved two break points in the final game to seal the win.

“It was such a difficult match,” said Rybakina. “I had some opportunities in the second set but she played really well and for me physically it was a little bit more difficult. It was tough.”

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova also progressed to the last eight with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova.

Katerina Siniakova, who took out Coco Gauff in the second round, could not build on Tuesday’s success as the Czech lost in straight sets to Danielle Collins.

Apart from expressing her thoughts on Olympic glory, she continued to talk about her passion, the gravity of becoming an Olympian. Lindsey explained that she knew better about her next triumph as she wanted to be better every time as an enthusiastic competitor. “I just got better and better and, you know, winning more and more, and I didn’t think I was special. Spiranac, the world’s biggest golf influencer, decided to have some fun with the news of Tiger Woods and TaylorMade joining.

Syndication: Akron Beacon Journal, Paige Spiranac

Monday night, Tiger Woods unveiled his new apparel line, Sun Day Red. He is partnering with TaylorMade creating a unique, premium shoewear and clothing line that will have fans running to the store.

One day later, golf influencer Paige Spiranac decided to have some related fun.

Spiranac took to X, formerly Twitter, to post some truly hysterical content.

“Working on my new clothing line logo Fri Day Cut. The lines represent how many over par I was in my first pro tournament,” she wrote.

There is actually a bit more to unpack there than meets the eye.

Obviously, yes, the image she depicts has certain connotations to it physically. But also, the words itself have some meaning.

Part of what makes Spiranac so much fun is how self-deprecating she can be. Fri Day Cut, come on, that’s good. Then there’s the reference to Tiger’s stripes.

Woods’ new logo for Sun Day Red, as he pointed out during the special press event Monday night that Playing Through was invited to, was tailor made to him, pun intended.

Tiger Woods & TaylorMade Golf Announce New Apparel and Footwear Brand “Sun Day Red”

Each of the 15 stripes on the new logo represent Woods’ 15 major championships.

Woods jokingly said at the event that the logo will need to be changed though after he wins his 16th major title.

Tiger partnering with TaylorMade comes on the heels of the shocking split with Nike after 27 years. Woods had actually been playing with TaylorMade equipment for the last few years since Nike curtailed their footprint in the sport of golf.

So, the divorce was only a matter of time.

All the while, leave it to Spiranac to find a comedic approach. She has built her reputation on her wittiness, sexuality and also her golfing prowess. Much of that was put on display yet again Tuesday with this post.

After announcing the launch of Sun Day Red, Tiger Woods shared what his kids Sam and Charlie told him about his apparel line with TaylorMade Golf.

Tiger Woods is exploring a new course.

After the pro golfer announced his apparel line Sun Day Red with TaylorMade Golf, he revealed how his daughter, Sam, 16, and 15-year-old son Charlie’s reactions were on par with how any teen would respond.

Tiger Woods' daughter Sam amazes as her father's caddy for first time | Marca

“They are kids, right?” he told Erin Andrews at a Los Angeles press event on Feb. 12. “Something that looks cool, just doesn’t. ‘Dad, you serious?’ Things of that nature.”

Still, the athlete wants his kids—who he shares with ex Elin Nordegren—to have a grip on what he was doing.

“When I explained the process to them and the material that we’re gonna be using—the high-end premium products—that kind of goes a little bit above them,” he continued. “But they said ‘Dad, is it going to be cool?’ And I said, ‘Of course it’s gonna be cool.’ And that’s all they care about.”

And while Sam has served as his caddie and Charlie followed in Tiger’s footsteps by playing golf himself, the 15-time majors champion isn’t putting pressure on his son to sport his new line.

“He can wear whatever the hell he wants,” the 48-year-old admitted. “I just wish I had his hair.”

Tiger Woods, Charlie Woods

Because in the end, they’re separate people—something Tiger has made very clear to the sports community.

“Don’t compare him to me,” Tiger said on a 2022 episode of Another Golf Podcast. “‘Cause he’s not me, he’s Charlie, OK? He’s going to be his own person. Whatever road he goes down, he’s going to go down his own road and he’s going to create his own path.”

And to him, that’s life’s hole in one.

“That to me is so important as a father that I provide that environment and that support that he can go down whatever path he wants to,” Tiger continued. “I just want him to be the best at it.”

Whether that’s on the course or on the sidelines cheering dad on. Take a look for yourself at how Charlie and Sam support their dad…
