Iga Swiatek remains No 1 in the WTA Rankings following the Australian Open, but her lead has been cut by Aryna Sabalenka while there were big wins for Coco Gauff, Qinwen Zheng and Elina Svitolina in terms of milestones.

Four-time Grand Slam winner Swiatek started her 88th week at No 1 in the WTA Rankings on Monday, but her lead has been reduced to 865 points after Aryna Sabalenka successfully defended her crown at Melbourne Park.

Sabalenka was in imperious form during the fortnight Down Under as she won the title without dropping a set.

She will have an opportunity in the coming weeks to chip away at the lead as Swiatek has a lot of points to defend at the Qatar Open and the Abu Dhabi Championships.

Coco Gauff returns to No 3 following her run to the semi-final in Melbourne and she has broken through the 7,000-point mark for the first time in her career with her tally standing at 7,200.

Elena Rybakina was the big loser among the big names as she drops two places to No 5 following her early exit in Australia.

The big winner was undoubtedly Qinwen Zheng as she cracked the top 10 for the first time in her career after moving up eight places to No 7 on the back of her run to the final in Melbourne.

There is only one new entrant in the top 20 with Svitolina moving up four places to No 19 after reaching the fourth round of the hard-court Grand Slam. It is the first time that the former world No 3 is in the top 20 since May 2022.

Australian Open semi-finalist Dayana Yastremska surged 64 places to No 29 and quarter-finalist Linda Noskova is one place behind the Ukrainian after moving up 20 places.

The 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva’s rise continues as she is now at a career-high No 37 after moving up 12 places while Anna Kalinskaya rose 37 places to No 38.

The biggest mover into the top 100 was Maria Timofeeva as the Russian climbed 70 places to No 100 after reaching the fourth round in Melbourne having come through qualifying.

Katie Boulter is highest ranked British player at No 54 with Jodie Burrage at No 102, Harriet Dart at No 104 and Heather Watson at No 139. Emma Raducanu sits at No 295 after winning one match at the Australian Open.

Red Bull and Max Verstappen have F1 in a chokehold, but Guenther Steiner is one of those who believes the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris will be able to compete in 2024

Guenther Steiner is certain Red Bull’s rivals will be in with a shout of toppling Max Verstappen this year.

No-one could touch the Dutchman last year when he was armed with the all-conquering RB19. And there are fears that the situation will not change until the next major change to car regulations in 2026

Max Verstappen and Red Bull enjoyed record-breaking dominance in 2023
Max Verstappen and Red Bull enjoyed record-breaking dominance in 2023

But Steiner seems confident that the balance of power could shift before then. The former Haas boss pointed at the progress other teams made throughout the 2023 season as reasons to be hopeful that the competition will be much closer this year.

Asked for his opinion on the situation at the front of the grid, Steiner said: “That will end. This is a period in my opinion… I think the teams next year, some of them will catch up. Look at what McLaren did last year, they caught up pretty quick.

“Any race it can come that somebody catches up because the regulations stayed stable. There is a limit [on] what you can develop and it’s just [that] everybody is going to [reach] that point.

“Then, for sure, in 2026 I think the cars are even newer, with the new regulations, engine regulations, [so] there will be a complete change in everything in 2026 in my opinion. I think the sport will stay interesting.”

The point Steiner made about teams getting closer to the performance ceiling of the current regulations echoes what Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said at the end of last season. He too admitted that the gap between his team and their rivals is likely to close, because the champions have far less room to improve.

Horner said: “I’m fully expecting – with stable regs and diminishing returns for us because I think we got to the top of the curve quicker than others – the field is going to converge.

“There’s always a reset as you go into the following year, and I’m convinced that you’ll see a lot more cars that perhaps look like an RB19 philosophy. If you stand still in this business, you tend to be going backwards. And I think that we have got up that curve quicker than others. But we’re into a law of diminishing returns.”

Even Verstappen is aware that he is unlikely to have it as easy as he did last year again. He said: “The others will improve their cars and get closer to us. I don’t think it’s that realistic to achieve that win rate again. But that’s fine. To already have a season like we’ve had is insane… The others are not stupid. They are all learning.”

The famous skier has been in the wars recently

American skiing sensation Lindsey Vonn has updated fans on her physical condition after having to undergo multiple surgeries following the end of her career.

Vonn retired from the sport in 2019 as she could no longer compete at the level she wanted, and she has then had to have multiple knee surgeries.

Sharing a message with plenty of photos on her Instagram account, Vonn explains just how tough it was to keep going under the knife and build her muscles back up.

Vonn’s inspiring message
“I’ve been bruised and broken but I’ve always come out the other side a better person. No matter how many times I fell, I always got back up. I didn’t do it alone though. I am so thankful to have had the support of friends, family and you guys, my fans,” she wrote.

“Knowing I had people supporting me helped me in my darkest hours,” she continued.

“Every day I tried to put one foot in front of the other until it eventually got me back to where I wanted to go… which was usually the top of the mountain.

“We are all on our own paths, but if you’re injured or going through a hard time, believe in yourself and know that you will come out of it a better and stronger person. You got this,” she concluded.

In 2019, Vonn underwent an operation to repair her torn lateral collateral ligament (LCL) but has continued to have knee problems.

“I’ve been dealing with all the damage from my ski racing career and have been trying to manage the pain as best I can,” Vonn wrote on Instagram in July after she revealed she was undergoing another surgery.

ate last summer, Brett Falkoff, a golf agent with the sports and marketing agency GSE Worldwide, learned by way of colleagues that Dick’s Sporting Goods, which owns and is the exclusive seller of Maxfli golf balls, was looking to increase Maxfli’s exposure by partnering with a PGA Tour player.

Lexi Thompson of the United States walks onto the first green during the final round of the LPGA Drive On Championship at Bradenton Country Club

The timing wasn’t right for any of the male players on GSE’s roster, but, Falkoff was asked, might 11-time LPGA winner Lexi Thompson, who Falkoff has represented since 2020 and whose ball deal with Bridgestone was set to expire at year’s end, be interested in exploring an agreement with Dick’s?

“I said, ‘Absolutely not,’” Falkoff told GOLF.com in a phone interview Monday.

Falkoff knew of Maxfli’s rich legacy of Tour pros playing its balls — the likes of Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman and Fred Couples all have endorsed the brand — but in more recent times Maxfli has had little to no presence in the game’s elite ranks. At first blush, Falkoff felt the prospect of Thompson gaming Maxflis was a non-starter.

Still, as he and his client scoped out options for a new ball partner for 2024 and beyond, they agreed to test Maxfli’s Tour Series model as part of the discovery process.

Then they saw the results.

Lexi Thompson signs with Maxfli for 2024 season - Yahoo Sports

“We were all in shock,” Falkoff said. “The golf ball was better than anything else she tested. It became a nice match, and we were able to work out a nice agreement.” That one-year arrangement will include Thompson playing the ball for the 2024 season and also wearing a Maxlfi logo on the right side of her visor; she also will provide feedback to Maxfli as it develops its 2025 models.

Falkoff knows how it might look: an established and highly marketable star signing with a relatively low-profile brand. “People look at a deal like this and say, ‘Oh, it must have been a money grab.’ [But] if you really looked into it, this late in her career, why would she do something that is just a money grab? At the end of the day, she’s just looking to play something that performs the best for her.”

He added: “I made it clear to Lexi that you’re not going to sign with a golf-ball company only because you’re getting paid a good amount of money. At this point in your career, you’re going to play whatever’s best for you.”

Extraordinary Journeys: Lexi Thompson

While Thompson saw excellent results during testing — she said she has picked up ball speed without losing any feel or control — Falkoff acknowledged that the switch wasn’t driven only by launch-monitor data. Though Thompson began to find her form toward the end of 2023, last year was largely a struggle for her. In her 11 starts before the Solheim Cup, Thompson made just three cuts and broke 70 only four times.

Change was needed, and it came, in the form of some mid-season swing tweaks and a caddie switch. In January of this year, Thompson announced that she had hired a new full-time caddie, Colton Heisey, with whom Thompson had begun working toward the end of 2023.

Then came a new ball.

“Whenever you’re struggling, you’ve got to realize that you need to change some things up,” said Falkoff, whose other clients include Bryson DeChambeau and Sam Burns. “She’s been with Bridgestone for five years. She always loved their golf ball, but sometimes when you’re struggling, you need to make a change, and she’s looking at all areas of the game, and the golf ball was one of them knowing this was going to be a contract year.”

Two PGA Tour pros played with Lexi Thompson. What'd they think?

The terms of the partnership were not disclosed, but it’s safe to say that Thompson, who also endorses, among other brands, Cobra Puma, Rolex, UKG and Club Champion, will be paid handsomely for becoming the first LPGA player to endorse and exclusively play a Maxfli ball. (The only other Maxfli-sponsored player on a major tour is nine-time PGA Tour Champions winner Fred Funk.)

“Lexi makes an ideal partner as an established presence in golf,” Aimee Watters, VP vertical brand marketing for Dick’s Sporting Goods, told GOLF.com by email. “She provides instant name recognition and further legitimacy to the Maxfli brand.”

When asked whether Dick’s is actively seeking other Tour pros to beef up its staff roster, Watters said, “Right now, we are laser focused on our deal with Lexi and look forward to supporting her on tour this year.”

In Thompson’s first start of 2024 — the LPGA Drive On Championship, in Bradenton, Fla., last week — she tied for 16th. Following a second-round 67, she was asked about the latest addition to her arsenal.

“I’ve been testing the ball for the last month or two, especially in the wind,” Thompson said. “In the wind is the most important [for] ball testing, and I’ve seen nothing but a little bit lower spin, which is great in the wind, and it does even better in the crosswind. That’s super-important for me, and I’m looking forward to playing it.”

Tennis could have a new Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal-style rivalry

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz will fight for future Grand Slams in a new rivalry like Federer against Nadal, a former Wimbledon champion has claimed. The Italian claimed his first Major title at the Australian Open at the age of 22. And the world No.4 was immediately congratulated on social media by his friend and double Grand Slam winner Alcaraz – the only other man under 25 to have won a Major.

A new rivalry like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal could be breaking through

Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal enjoyed a decade-long battle at the top of the rankings until Novak Djokovic overtook them both. And the Serb, who turns 37 in May, insisted he still has the drive to add to his male record haul of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

But the future is the next generation with Alcaraz only 20. And Aussie legend Lleyton Hewitt, who won Wimbledon in 2002, said: “I think this is going to be one of the great rivalries moving forward, the Sinner-Alcaraz rivalry. Potentially like the Roger-Rafa one we saw for so many years as well. And it’s intriguing. Both game styles are slightly different, their upbringings are different as well, so I’m really excited. I think tennis needs these new guys coming through.”

The two-time Major champion added: “There’s been plenty of talk about Sinner for three or four years, that he’s a possible Grand Slam champion and world No.1 but Alcaraz came out of nowhere and really took that from him. I think that really spurred Jannik on to try and find a way to be able to win these titles.”

Asked if Sinner had been spurred on by Alcaraz, the Italian’s coach Darren Cahill said: “Hell, yeah! Absolutely. There’s no question seeing the young players come through and having success drives each and every one of them. Carlos has trail blazed for a lot of young players. We’re thankful for that.”

“I do think Jannik can become a superstar. I think this sport at the moment has a few superstars. I think Carlos is very similar to Jannik in both the way they play with the excitement level they bring to the game, and their personalities and their likability. Both guys are incredibly alike off the court. They both like each other. They both have a friendly rivalry.”

Sinner, who has strong family support like the Spaniard, said: “Obviously I’m really happy about what Carlos has done and what he is doing. When we play, it’s always a good matchup, but at the moment we also have to say that he is further than I am.”

The Italian leads their head-to-head encounters 4-3 and his performances Down Under showed he has made big progress in his game since losing the Wimbledon semi-final.

Adriano Panatta, the last Italian male Grand Slam winner at the 1976 French Open, told Gazzetta dello Sport: “Sinner has done crazy things in Melbourne. What will happen now? He will now win a lot more Slams. I am sure that he is now the best player in the world. Forget the rankings. In the last three months, he has made a great leap forward and he seems like a different player. He has become a man.”

Exclusive: Marc Hynes, who worked with Hamilton from 2016-2021, will focus on the racing aspect of the seven-time champion’s career
Lewis Hamilton’s preparations for the new season have been boosted by the return to his inner circle of friend and former right-hand man Marc Hynes.

Hynes is a former British Formula Three champion who has known the Mercedes driver since they were junior racers, and who used to run Hamilton’s Project Forty Four management company. The pair enjoyed a fruitful five years together from 2016 until 2021. Hamilton won four of his seven world titles with the former racer by his side until Hynes left suddenly on the eve of the 2021 season to focus on his own business.

The split was amicable, but Hamilton would certainly have missed the presence of his trusted advisor and confidant over last three seasons, all three of which have been won by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

Hamilton chose to shuffle his management setup following Hynes’ departure, bringing in Canadian media talent manager Penni Thow, whose company Copper worked with him on various projects including the launch of merchandise brand Plus 44, non-alcoholic tequila Almave, two projects with Apple TV+, as well as the widely-publicised F1 film starring Brad Pitt which is currently in production.

The contract with Copper expired at the end of last year, although the 39-year-old will continue to work with New York-based Thow on some of these areas.

Hynes, who had been chief executive of Project Forty Four, the company Hamilton set up in 2014 after dispensing with Simon Fuller, will this time around be “solely focused on racing activities”, accompanying Hamilton to races and supporting him trackside.

A spokesperson for Hamilton told Telegraph Sport: “The management agreement between Penni Thow and her company Copper with Lewis Hamilton came to its natural end in December 2023, after the expiry of a fixed term.

“Over the course of the partnership, Penni and her team have supported Lewis’s entrepreneurial vision and together they have launched several exciting ventures. While the management agreement has ended, Copper will remain working with Lewis on some of these joint projects to ensure their continued development and success.

“Over the coming months Lewis will expanding his company Project Forty Four, which was set up in 2014, and will be making exciting appointments and announcements as he continues to grow his entrepreneurial business and investment interests.

“Lewis is looking forward to the beginning of the new Formula One season and he will be working with Marc Hynes, his long term friend and former colleague who will be providing his expertise to assist Lewis on the track. Gymnast Sunisa Lee has been away from gymnastics towards the latter part of 2023. But did that stop her from garnering love and support? No. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics all-around gold medalist has been suffering from a kidney disease, but she’s on a recovery journey already. Sitting out on back-to-back championships has allowed her compatriots to sweep titles. But with Lee’s Olympic return this year, they will have to toil since she has a new vault skill to ace.

Being mindful of her gymnastic practice didn’t mean skipping social media. Getting showered with fan love and celebrating her healing safari, the 20-year-old has also made big strides in her partnership domain. But one alliance stood out particularly, which is almost a household name now.

Sunisa Lee unveils GK Elite’s latest leotard line
Lee took to her Instagram handle to post a pink-and-purple leotard line, which perfectly embodies her lively nature. The caption says, “The @gkelite x @sunisalee collection you all have been asking for is finally here!! *adds to cart* #ad#partnership#gkelite”. Alongside big names like Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, and Jade Carey, the world’s leading brand in gymnastics attire, has Lee welcomed in all her glory. Oftentimes using her social media platform to express her adoration for GK Elite, she featured with them in a recent Instagram reel as well.

Donning blue leotards, the phenoms came up in a carousel while radiating sportsmanship. The leotards by GK Elite go beyond just any normal gymnastic attire. The gymnasts brainstorm with the team by designing the leotards, while also making sure those sit in line with the youngsters. With the catch line “Season to Shine: Athlete Edition”, these leotards summon all gymnasts to wear the iconic confidence sported by the makers. But where did Lee’s journey with fashion start?

Lee’s partnership dates back to 2021
Being fashion forward is an essential factor in the gymnastic domain. So, to keep up with the trends whilst being an inspirational figure, Sunisa Lee joined hands with GK Elite in 2021. Holding hands with PrettyLittleThing, she launched her first leotard collection in 2022.

Since then, her creativity only kept upping. After the NCAA updated the new rule book where the athletes could make money out of NIL deals, there was no going back. “I love fashion so much and when I’m not in my leotard, I love putting looks together”, said she, who always dreamt of designing her own clothes. In the upcoming Paris Olympics, Lee is aiming to name full twisting Jaeger aka ‘The Lee’.

In a massive development, former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson is rumored to be in talks to take on MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko in a boxing match in Saudi Arabia. The update comes from the MMA Pack on Instagram. A handful of hours ago, they shared a post on the platform informing their followers about the negotiations between the two parties.

Mike Tyson vs. Fedor Emelianenko boxing match negotiations are underway and targeted for later this year in Saudi Arabia,” wrote MMA Pack. Fedor Emelianenko, a 47-year-old Russian mixed martial artist, last fought in the Octagon in February 2023, while 57-year-old Tyson had his last appearance in the ring on November 29, 2020, against Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition fight. Emelianenko holds a 41-7-1 MMA record compared to Mike’s 50-6-0 professional boxing record.

After losing to Ryan Bader at Bellator 290, Emelianenko emphasized the end of his career in MMA. However, he did not mean combat sports in general because now the MMA legend wants to take on Mike Tyson in a boxing match. He spoke about the same in an interview with the MMA Hour.

Fedor Emelianenko has been ready for Mike Tyson for a while
While appearing in an interview with Ariel Helwani back on 10 August 2023, ‘The Last Emperor’ claimed, “MMA is done, 100 percent. I’m not going back to MMA. I want to try myself in boxing. I think that’s going to be interesting.” Emelianenko further added that he had seen the fight between Tyson and Jones Jr, so “Mike Tyson would be an interesting fight.”

A fight between them isn’t totally out of the question since Mike had previously expressed his desire to get back in the ring for the right amount of money. And given the fact that Tyson has an enormous following, people would clamor to buy the tickets for his fight. What’s more, Emelianenko also had a date in mind for the fight.

During the interview, Emelianenko had suggested that he would have been happy to fight Mike in the undercard of the Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou fight held in Saudi in October last year. He added, “I heard that Mike Tyson is going to help Francis Ngannou to prepare for (his Fury fight), so he’s probably in good shape too,” said Emelianenko.

While that date has long gone, if the rumors from MMA Pack turn out to be true, it wouldn’t take long for the powers that be in Saudi Arabia to drum up a whole new event for Tyson and Emelianenko. Would you like to see Mike Tyson enter the ring one more time? Who do you think would win?
