Serena Williams’ former coach Patrick Mouratoglou recently suggested that Roger Federer doesn’t have a plausible shot at being the greatest player of all time.

Roger Federer’s elegance is “unmatched” but he’s not the GOAT, insinuates Serena Williams’ ex-coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

Federer won 20 Major titles during a career than spanned more than two decades. He was also renowned for his effortless style of play, through which he was able to monopolize the majority of tennis fans.

Although the Swiss maestro transcended the sport through his class both on and off the court, his Grand Slam tally was eventually overtaken by Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

In that context, Serena Williams’ ex-coach Patrick Mouratoglou probably saw fit to express his views on the race for bragging rights between Djokovic, Nadal and Federer on his X handle on Thursday (January 4).

The Frenchman insisted that the Swiss would always be idolized for his elegance. But he conceded in the same breath that such subjective factors don’t have any bearing on the GOAT debate.

“No doubt that Roger’s elegance and inspired tennis is unmatched as much as there is no discussion about who is the Goat. In that matter, sports achievements is the only metric,” Mouratoglou said on X (formerly Twitter).

“Most of his career, Novak Djokovic has been at the top even though he played in the same era as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal” – Patrick Mouratoglou

Patrick Mouratoglou admittedly considers Novak Djokovic to be the undisputed GOAT, owing to the latter having won the most big tournaments in tennis history. The 53-year-old showered rich praise on the Serb a month ago, claiming that he had never seen such a dominant player in their late 30s.

He also expressed his admiration towards the 24-time Major winner for ending Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer’s duopoly in the last decade.

“I’ve never seen in the history of tennis someone who is on top of their game at 36, as much as they were at 26, 28. It’s a whole career of being at the top,” the Frenchman told Tennis Majors last December. “He had one or two difficult years, but most of his career he’s been at the top of his game, even though he played in the same era as Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, which says even more about how an incredible, dominant player he is.”

Mouratoglou added that in his opinion, the GOAT debate was “completely dead” after Djokovic’s triumphs at three of the four Majors last year.

“I think the famous debate about who is the GOAT, I guess, is completely dead now after this incredible year, three more Grand Slams, plus one final. He has the record almost everywhere of all – number of Masters 1000s, number of weeks No 1, number of Grand Slams – and he’s still playing, he’s still at the top,” he said.

Swedish heavyweight contender Otto Wallin said Anthony Joshua was ‘past his peak’ before their fight, but was taught a quick lesson when the Brit turned up as good as he has looked in some time.

Joshua dominated from the opening bell, picking his shots with tremendous precision and measured aggression, forcing Wallin to retire on his stool with blood around his nose following the fifth-round. It was ‘AJ’s a first back-to-back knockout win since 2017.

In an interview with Boxing News, Wallin cleared up news of his injury and showed support for his trainer, Joey Gamache, who made the decision to pull him out of the contest.

“I have a fracture on my nose, it’s not completely broken, but it’s fractured.”

“I noticed that I was bleeding but when you are in the fight you have so much adrenaline and it was early in the fight. I noticed that it was uncomfortable but I don’t think it made a big difference.”

“I didn’t disagree with him [when he chose to pull me out], Joey [Gamache] told me that he was going to stop it and I didn’t say anything. Joey has been with me for ten years, he has seen me in training and almost all of my fights and he has never pulled me out of anything, so I trust Joey, he is always looking out for me and I feel very happy that I have a trainer who puts my health first. There is a life after boxing, so I am very appreciative that he is looking out for me.”

Joshua’s win seems to have lined him up for a fight with Filip Hrgovic and a possible IBF Vacant Title as he seeks to become just the fifth three-time heavyweight champion of all-time.

Wallin, at 33 and with losses to just Joshua and Tyson Fury, will take stock and come back this year.

Zheng Qinwen withdrew from the Adelaide International on Thursday (January 4) due to an undisclosed injury. The World No. 14 had been hit on her playing hand by Iga Swiatek during her most recent singles outing at the 2024 United Cup — a coincidence that has amused a small section of tennis fans.

Earlier on Wednesday (January 3), Iga Swiatek took on Zheng Qinwen in her singles fixture for Team Poland at the United Cup in Perth. During the warm-up, she accidentally swatted a ball at her opponent. The Chinese was evidently miffed at being hit, following which she was captured on camera directing a few words towards the World No. 1.

Swiatek, meanwhile, apologized nonchalantly for accidentally hitting Qinwen before shrugging her shoulders. The altercation between the two top players seemingly irked tennis fans on social media, many of whom felt the Pole’s apology was not sincere.

Zheng Qinwen has since withdrawn from the WTA 500 event in Adelaide, casting a shadow over her prospects of doing well at the Australian Open. The above news set a rather humorous tone in the online tennis community, with a few fans suggesting that Iga Swiatek is to blame for the Chinese’s misfortune.

One fan joked on X that the World No. 1 would pay for taking Qinwen out of competition soon.

“Omg Iga will pay for her crimes,” they wrote.

Another fan, meanwhile, hilariously insisted that the Chinese may even file a lawsuit against the Pole.

“She’s trying to get that lawsuit money!” they wrote.

Zheng Qinwen looking to build on her breakout 2023 WTA tour season

Zheng Qinwen, meanwhile, put together a good season on the WTA tour last year. The 21-year-old compiled a 35-19 win/loss record, the highlights of which include winning two titles and reaching the quarterfinals of the 2023 US Open.

She also beat the likes of Jelena Ostapenko and Donna Vekic en route to the final at the WTA Elite Trophy, where she lost to Beatriz Haddad Maia in two tiebreakers.

The Chinese has been playing some sharp tennis since breaking into the top 30 in 2022. Standing at 5’10”, the youngster hits big serves and powerful, deep groundstrokes, while also showing impressive movement on the court.

Zheng Qinwen had a good start to her 2023 season at this week’s United Cup, beating Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova and Olga Danilovic to ensure Team China qualified for the quarterfinals.

She, however, lost against familiar foe Iga Swiatek for the fifth time in her career as Team Poland bundled Team China out by a scoreline of 3-0 to advance to the semifinals.

Mike Tyson hilariously revealed the exact reason why he would never have been able to become a UFC fighter.

Tyson enjoyed a legendary boxing career as he remains the youngest world heavyweight champion in history.

He won the WBC title aged just 20, beating Trevor Berbick in the second round to write his name in the boxing record books.

But how would his boxing skills translate to MMA and specifically in the UFC? Well, the former ‘Baddest Man on the Planet’ himself doesn’t like his chances inside the famed Octagon.

And he revealed why.

Tyson said that he could never become a UFC fighter because he has the ‘worst feet in the world’.

In an interview with GQ Sports, he was asked how he would have fared as an MMA fighter to which he replied: “I don’t know what I would do in the UFC, because I watched the UFC a couple of times, and I watched these guys step on people’s feet.”

The 57-year-old added: “And I have the worst feet in the world, and if somebody stepped on my feet, I would totally tap out and just give up.

“It would be a no-brainer.”

Tyson was a playable character on the video games UFC 2, UFC 3 and UFC 5 as he’s often sat cageside with Dana White, who once joined the ex-boxer’s podcast to discuss UFC GOATs.

Asked to name the greatest fighters in UFC history, White replied: “So hard to do because there have been so many great fighters… but you gotta start with Jon Jones.

“You got to have Amanda Nunes,” he said, calling her the ‘greatest female fighter of all time’.

The UFC CEO continued: “How do you not have Usman?

“If you look at the different generations of people who helped take the sport to another level,” said White. “It’s hard to just pick five all-time great fighters. Matt Hughes would have to make the list… and then you look at all the different Brazilians that came up… the Pride era. It’s hard to pick just five.”

They are optimistic about TGL’s potential success

Golf star Rory McIlroy has announced a new venture with Tiger Woods, presenting a virtual indoor golf league called Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL).

The show is set to replace NFL on prime-time television during the football league’s end-of-season break. TGL will be hosted at the SoFi Centre in Florida, featuring a virtual green that can transform into different courses

Project postponed
Although initially planned for a 2024 launch, the project has been postponed to 2025 due to storm damage to the venue in November. McIlroy and Woods are optimistic about TGL’s potential success among golf enthusiasts, providing an exciting start to each week on the PGA Tour.

“TGL, which is a new high-tech indoor golf league that we’re trying to start in the US with Tiger Woods. It’s going to be Monday night, primetime in America,” McIlroy told Stick to Football podcast.

“When the NFL stops for the season, we’re going to take that slot on a Monday night, and it’s going to be a kickoff to the week on the PGA Tour.

“It’s an indoor arena where anything inside of 50 yards you play onto a green that can rotate and the slopes can change.

“Anything outside 50 yards, you hit into this massive simulator, which is the size of an IMAX screen – there’s a lot of tech involved in terms of ball speeds, and launch triangles and spin rates, trying to make it an interactive experience for people.”

As the most formidable gymnast in history, Simone Biles has effortlessly outshined every woman or man in the gymnastic realm. But her 35 medals across Worlds and Olympics aren’t limited to metal pieces only. The moolah which she rakes in with each medal is a thing to consider too. After a two-year hiatus, when the 26-year-old made a comeback at the 2023 US National Championships, it was difficult to register how powerful her displays were. But now, as the Olympic year rolled in, it’s time for clearing the air. But the question does arise. How affluent is she in the grand scheme of things?

Currently standing with 27 World Championship medals including 21 golds, this year was path-breaking in Biles’ life. Not only that, she had showered herself with lucrative brand deals to diversify her portfolio and become the business acumen queen. But the one question that remains, how much money does Simone Biles make from gymnastics?

Simone Biles’ lucre and prospects
Ceremoniously enough, Biles has emerged as the most decorated woman athlete. But 2023 was especially noteworthy since she made it to the Forbes’ Highest-paid female athletes’ list. And according to that, she’s the owner of $10million, as per December 2022. And according to 2023’s Forbes list, she stands with $7.1million, the major of which has been bagged from endorsements. Biles rescinded herself on grounds of depression in 2020. Biles walked out of the Tokyo Olympics with ennui. But the Olympian doesn’t earn as much money as you think via gymnastics. To break it down, per Forbes, $37,500 for each gold medal, $22,500 for each silver medal, $15,000 for each bronze medal, according to 2022’s report.

Moving on, as per 2016 Rio Olympics, each gold medal held $25,000, each silver medal $15,000 and each bronze $10,000. The 26-year-old had walked home with a cumulative $147,500 from her Olympic winnings. But the 4x Olympic gold medalist credits a great deal of her career success to her brand partners.

Brand endorsements of Biles
Some brands Simone Biles has dabbled in are Athleta, Beats by Dre, Core Power Fitness Shakes, GK Elite, Candid Dental, Uber Eats, United Airlines, Visa, Hershey’s, Kellogg’s, MasterClass, Mattress Firm, and SK-II. Some days before the 2020 Summer Olympics, she terminated her ties with the behemoth Nike. Moreover, the Olympian concocts several sponsored content and advertises her brands across her social platforms.

Coco Gauff secured her third consecutive victory, advancing to the ASB Classic semifinals after defeating 8th seed Varvara Gracheva (No. 42) with a score of 6-1, 6-1. The American once again progressed without dropping a set, remaining on track for the Auckland title defense.

World No. 3 arrived after comfortable victories over Claire Liu (6-4, 6-2) and Brenda Fruhvirtova (6-3, 6-0). On Gracheva’s side, she fought in the first round to overcome Tereza Martincova (6-7, 7-5, 6-2) and Lulu Radovcic (6-3, 6-4) in her debut at the ASB Classic. Having conceded just 11 games in three matches, Gauff will face compatriot Emma Navarro (No. 31) in the semifinals.

Coco Gauf shines
In the first set, Gauff claimed an early break after six minutes, quickly taking a comfortable 3-0 lead with her serve. While Gracheva managed to hold her serve, Gauff won three consecutive games, securing the first set 6-1 in just 25 minutes. The 2023 US Open champion had a 71% first serve, winning 71% of service points and 56% on returns. Gauff capitalized on crucial moments in the set, converting the only two break opportunities created.

The second set posed minimal challenges for Coco as she secured two consecutive breaks, both on her first opportunities, taking a 4-0 lead. Although Gracheva defended her serve for the first time in the set, Gauff dominated with her serve and secured another break in the most contested game of the match, closing the score 6-1, 6-1.

The match concluded in just 53 minutes, with Gauff winning 64% of the points and not conceding any break opportunities to the French player. The 19-year-old youngster secured her third consecutive victory, showcasing her readiness for the upcoming Australian Open, where she will be the third seed in the tournament.

In the semifinals, Gauff will face 4th seed Emma Navarro (No. 31), a 22-year-old American who has had a remarkable campaign in Auckland, on the verge of entering the top-30 for the first time in her career. Navarro defeated 7th seed Petra Martic (No. 40) 6-4, 6-3 in the previous round.

In a viral video posted on TikTok, tennis icon Serena Williams pulled off her wig while cradling her newborn baby, Adira, and it was a moment of relief felt by Black women around the world. That sigh of relief is exactly how we want all Black women moving in 2024 , releasing all of the uncomfortable things in the way and understanding that it’s okay to not always be okay.

In the background of the video, someone can be heard saying, “That’s the video, that’s our shot. That’s from coming home after winning icon of the year”—which seems to indicate that the video was filmed after Williams accepted the CFDA Fashion Icon Award in November 2023. That was also the same month that Williams took to X to share the vulnerable post, “I am not ok today. And that’s ok to not be ok. No one is ok every single day. If you are not ok today I’m with you. There’s always tomorrow. Love you.”

Yet, Williams has also shared the beautiful moments of her life as well, such as teaching her daughter languages, to play tennis, and dealing with toddler temper tantrums.

https://x.com/serenawilliams/status/1729557645437046976?s=20

Leading up to eh CFDAs, Williams documented much of the glam process. But one video captioned, “What my life is really like…it’s not as glamorous as you think…” revealed the final result of her hair, makeup, and outfit for the CFDAs, with the next shot being of her sitting in a chair, exhausted while pumping milk for her daughter.

In 2024, perhaps all Black women. would do well to take apage out of Serena’s playbook and be ok with the polished and not-so polished parts of life. Sometimes we too need to pull back our wigs (literally and figuratively) and take a sigh of relief.

In a world where every tweet can spark a revolution, a single post from a champion boxer has started a dialogue that extends far beyond the ring. Claressa Shields, a two-division undisputed champion, is known for her power punches and fearless spirit. But recently, it’s her words outside the ring that are making an impact, igniting a discussion on an unexpected and often overlooked issue in the sports world.

As she prepares for an upcoming rematch, Shields has left her fans and followers intrigued and slightly perplexed with a recent tweet. While the message comes from a place of power, it also highlights a curious discrepancy in the world of women’s sports, leaving many to ponder over its implications.

A tweet that packs a punch: Claressa Shields highlights discrepancy in women’s sports viewership
In the heart of the discussion lies a tweet from Shields that has since garnered significant attention. The champion boxer took to her Twitter account to express a striking observation. She wrote, “It’s proven that most women don’t watch women sports. That’s weird to me. If we want to prosper in our sport we have to support each other!!! All women champions fights I’ve been too, all of them should be at my World title fight Vs Gabriels June 3rd! It should be packed with.”

https://x.com/Claressashields/status/1657027348561108992?s=20

Shields’ words seem to highlight an issue that has long been present but scarcely discussed the lower viewership of women’s sports, even among women themselves. With the upcoming match against four-division world champion Hanna Gabriels on the horizon, Shields’ call for more women to support and attend women’s sports events is timely, powerful, and evocative.

Is Claressa Shields the ‘face of women’s boxing’?
In a recent interview conducted at her Florida club during a training session, Shields discussed her upcoming bout with Gabriels, her personal beliefs about her role in the sport, and the disparity she sees in women’s representation in boxing. The Michigan native asserted her prowess in the ring, citing her victory over Savannah Marshall as evidence of her skill. She emphasized her conviction with a bold statement, “If I was a man, I’d be the face of boxing. I’ve got more accomplishments than everybody.”

Shields expressed frustration over the lack of consideration given to women’s boxing in discussions about the sport’s leading figures. However, she remains committed to her craft, promising to continue honing her skills and promoting women’s boxing, regardless of the world’s perception.

She ended the chat by emphasizing the significance of her impending bout against Gabriels, promising to bring her best self to the ring on fight night.
