In a highly anticipated showdown Saturday, Canelo Álvarez will face the undefeated David Benavidez and …

Oops. That’s the fight that most of the boxing world wanted to see on Cinco de Mayo weekend. Instead, it’ll be an all-Mexican showdown between Álvarez (60-2-2, 39 KOs) and Jaime Munguía (43-0, 34 KOs) in a super middleweight bout.

Canelo Alvarez

“This is going to be a great Mexican war,” Canelo said. “…It’s for all the Mexican fans, no matter who they support.”

Munguía, who is from Tijuana, is a hard-punching 27-year-old coming off a ninth-round TKO over John Ryder in January. He lands a lot of punches, takes a lot of punches and says he’ll be looking for the knockout.

Álvarez, the undisputed super middleweight champion from Guadalajara, clearly relishes the potential for landing a knockout, too. But the 5-foot-8 Álvarez will be fighting a boxer four inches taller than he is and could be more vulnerable than ever at 33.

“Outside the ring, Canelo has all my respect,” Munguía said, “but inside the ring, that respect goes out the window.”

Keep it here on Saturday and follow the big fight in Las Vegas:

Canelo Alvarez-Jaime Munguia fight predictions
Brian Campbell, CBS: Whether or not Alvarez can finish the job with a spectacular finish likely depends upon how much punishment Munguia can take. Prediction: Alvarez by Unanimous Decision.

Ben Blackwell, Boxing Scene: I can envisage Canelo picking off an aggressive Munguia with counter shots before ultimately taking over proceedings and claiming victory. Prediction: Alvarez by Unanimous Decision.

John Hansen, Bad Left Hook: Today’s Canelo only seems to have six or seven rounds of gas in his tank, but I don’t think there’s much chance this fight goes past that point. Prediction: Canelo by KO, sixth round.

Jim Lampley, PPV.COM: While there are still some chinks in Jaime Munguia’s armor, he does have armor. So, an upset isn’t out of the question…just unlikely. Canelo by unanimous decision is most likely.”

Leonard Ellerbee, promoter: “I fully expect this to be one of (Alvarez’s) easiest fights. It’ll be very, very entertaining. I think it will be a highlight reel knockout, anywhere from the opening bell to six rounds.’’

Anthony Tarver told Little Giant Boxing, “I think that fight is going to be interesting. Munguia reminds me of a young Canelo trying to make his mark on the go, you feel me?’’

Anthony Ruiz, told Little Giant Boxing, “You can’t underestimate Munguia. He’s a Mexican, he’s a warrior, he takes a lot of punishment. He can take a punch and he’s young, and he’s hungry too.’’

Timothy Bradley told Fight Hub TV, “Munguia ain’t knocking out no Canelo. Triple G (Gennadiy Golovkin) couldn’t even hurt Canelo. That dude’s got the best chin in the business, bruh.’’

Josh Peter, USA TODAY Sports: Canelo’s counterpunching will serve him well against the talented but defensively flawed Munguia. Prediction: Canelo by TKO, 8th round.

Does Canelo Alvarez need dramatic win?
Canelo Alvarez cherishes his legacy as one of the greatest Mexican fighters ever. And one Mexican boxing authority says Alvarez still has work to do to win over all of his countrymen and potentially supplant Julio Cesar Chavez as the greatest Mexican boxer ever.

“The only thing Canelo is lacking is a dramatic fight where he’s knocked down and gets up and wins,’’ said Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the Mexican-based World Boxing Council. “Or he’s cut and bloodied and comes back and wins. Because that’s what gives drama and makes excitement that are memories for the lifetime.

“Canelo is such a great fighter, so crafted, so technical that he lacks the drama.’’

Alvarez grinned when asked about Sulaiman’s comments.

“I’m just happy doing my thing and I’m going to continue winning,’’ he said.

His trainer, Eddy Reynoso, did not grin.

“You have your haters and you have your people that support you,’’ Reynoso said. “In Mexico sometimes we have the reputation of sort of like a crab and we go backwards and we kind of stumble upon ourselves. So that’s just kind of our idiosyncrasy. But in the end Mexicans support Mexicans as well.’’

Canelo Alvarez aimed a ruthless dig at Mike Tyson.

Canelo Alvarez did not hold back when he was asked about Mike Tyson following his damning comments over a proposed fight against David Benavidez.

Canelo, who is undisputed champion at super-middleweight, was briefly linked with a fight against Benavidez before opting to face Jaime Munguia.

The boxing superstar came face-to-face with the unbeaten 27-year-old in last night’s kick-off press conference in Los Angeles, California.

After the presser, the 33-year-old spoke to reporters on the red carpet and was asked about Tyson’s claim.

Tyson, who is set to face Jake Paul on July 20, accused Canelo of disrespecting the legacy of Mexican boxing by not agreeing to fight Benavidez.

“I can’t believe what I just heard,” the 57-year-old said.

“What’s wrong with Canelo? Is he afraid of losing? Doesn’t he want to give the fans the fight they want to see? Don’t you want to give the fans the fight they want to see?

“Do you not respect the legacy of the great Mexican champions who faced the best regardless of the money?” He asked. “This is a shame for boxing and for Mexico. If I were him, I would accept the fight with Benavidez and show the world that he is the best.

“But it seems he doesn’t have the courage to do it; It is a shame because he has a lot of talent, but he lacks heart.”

Well, Canelo has now responded, and he’s pulled no punches as he aimed a ruthless dig at the former world heavyweight champion.

Asked if he respects Tyson’s opinion after he called for him to fight Benavidez, the Mexican sensation ruthlessly replied: “I’d respect his opinion if he was sober.”

While Canelo holds the WBA (super), IBF, WBO, WBC and The Ring Magazine super-middleweight world titles, Benavidez is in possession of the interim WBC super-middleweight belt.

The American star boasts an undefeated professional record (28-0), having beaten the likes of David Lemieux, Caleb Plant and Demetrius Andrade.

But he’ll have to wait before landing a showdown with Canelo, who will return to action on May 4 against Munguia.

There is no denying that Terence Crawford is one of the best fighters boxing has to offer today. Doubling down on his boxing acumen, former heavyweight champion, Lennox Lewis has suggested how ‘Bud’ can possibly beat, another abled fighter of today, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

After beating Julius Indongo in 2017 to become undisputed in the super lightweight class and then defeating Errol Spence Jr., to become undisputed in the welterweight division, he is one of the very few 2x undisputed champions in boxing history. In the wake of such a feat, in hopes of turning the 2x into 3x, the ambitious Crawford called on the unified super middleweight champion, Canelo Álvarez. But can Crawford really defeat Canelo, who’s only been defeated twice in his 64-fight career? Here is what Lewis has to say.

Terence Crawford Seizes the Moment to Become Undisputed Boxing Champion - WSJ

Lennox Lewis is all praises for Terence Crawford
It’s a possibility,” remarked the 3x world heavyweight champion. In a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, Lennox Lewis was asked about what he thinks of Crawford wanting to fight Canelo. The British legend said, “Let me tell you about Terence Crawford, that man is Kung Fu. You know, when you watch a martial arts movie, you know, you think of him, because he’s full with his style, great with his style.”

“He’s got power, he’s got poise, he’s got speed, he’s got movement, he’s got the full package and no wonder is undisputed, double undisputed that’s quite remarkable,” said Lewis.

He further mentioned that if he went on to beat Canelo, he would be undisputed thrice and that would been even more remarkable. And if this feat is achieved, he added, “We got to bow to him at that point,” making a splendid case for Bud.

But is that enough to beat Canelo, the Mexican fighter who’s considered to be one of the best in the sport?

Lewis argued that there is a way to defeat Canelo that hardly any fighter has learned. Bivol’s victory over the Jalisco fighter was attributed to the former’s weight. Mayweather fought a Canelo who was still young in the sport, while ‘Money’ was seemingly in his prime, coming off a strong streak of undefeated fights.

So, what is this way that Lewis suggests? It’s the art of ‘jabs’.

The Lennox Lewis jab
‘The Lion’ as many call him, was famous and even feared for his signature jab that he perfected early in his career. The signature straight right hand has fazed the likes of Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield. Now, as he looks back at how ‘the jab’ pushed him to the top of boxing, leaving him defeated only twice in his 45-fight-long career, he thinks the jab is what could dethrone Alvarez.

He further explained, “I know every great heavyweight has a jab. Even the lighter weights, they’re not using the jabs. They’re forgetting that the jab is the main weapon of a fighter. The first weapon of a fighter is a jab, and after that, it’s a right-hand hook, uppercut. But first, you gotta establish your jab.”

Terence Crawford currently awaits a date for his rematch with Errol Spence Jr. Once that happens, it remains to be seen if he gets a fight with Canelo. Who do you think would win between Bud and Canelo? Let us know in the comments section below.
