Gervonta Davis Ascends To WBA Super Lightweight Champion - Sports Illustrated Boxing News, Analysis and More

Davis hasn’t fought since his win over Ryan Garcia in a mega-event last April. The Baltimore native served 44 days in a detention center in June having violated terms to his 90-day house arrest at the home of his long-time trainer Calvin Ford. Davis had pled guilty to taking part in a car accident involving four people in November 2020.

Since his release, he has been linked to several possible fights, including a recent offer from Eddie Hearn to move up to welterweight and face Conor Benn. That always looked a stretch for Tank, who has long fought on the PBC umbrella.

Meanwhile, Martin was riding the crest of a wave and primed to face Shakur Stevenson last fall for the vacant WBC 135-pound belt. However, at the last minute he backed away from the deal and hasn’t fought since. While it was startling at the time, it always looked as though PBC had something up their sleeve for Martin, and a fight with Davis apparently made the most sense.

Gervonta Davis' plea deal rejected after 2021 hit-and-run crash

Davis (29-0, 27 knockouts), rated at No. 2 by The Ring at lightweight, impressively took the IBF 130-pound title from Jose Pedraza (TKO 7) in 2017. Since then, his star has risen and he is one of the most popular attractions in America, regularly selling out arenas across the country and performing on Showtime Pay-Per-View.

The 29-year-old owns a highlight-reel knockout over Leo Santa Cruz (KO 6) and showed that his vaunted power carries up in weight when he came on strong to stop the much larger Mario Barrios (TKO 11) at 140 pounds. More recently, he stopped WBA 130-pound titlist Hector Luis Garcia (TKO 9) and then dismantled Ryan Garcia (KO 7) in a fight that garnered 1.2 million PPVs.

Martin (18-0, 12 KOs), rated at No. 6 by The Ring at lightweight, won his first 11 fights and started working with then-unified welterweight titlist Errol Spence Jr. and his trainer Derrick James. The leg-up has benefited Martin, who has gone from strength to strength, taking the unbeaten record of Jerry Perez (KO 7), stopping one-time contender Romero Duno (TKO 4) and Jackson Marinez (TKO 10).

Gervonta Davis knocks out Ryan Garcia in seventh round | Boxing News | Al Jazeera

He was hugely impressive dominating Michel Rivera (UD 12) in a match up of unbeaten prospects. The 29-year-old southpaw had a harder time than expected and had to come on late to edge out Artem Harutyunyan (UD 12) last July.

Promoter Eddie Hearn says Gervonta Davis rejected an offer of over $10 million that could been as high as $25 million from the PPV and gate money for a fight against welterweight Conor Benn.

Hearn didn’t say he could have gotten as much as $25 million for the fight if he had told Tank Davis. If Tank wanted that amount guaranteed, that would be a problem because the fight may not have done well enough on the U.S. side for Hearn to break even.

American boxing fans probably wouldn’t be interested in paying to watch Tank fight Benn, seeing that he’s not well known in the States, and the fans who do know of him recognize that he’s a limited fighter with an inflated record.

What also may have factored in Tank Davis’ decision not to agree to the offer was the reports of Benn rehydrating to 171 lbs for his last fight against Peter Dobson on February 3rd. If Tank took the fight, he’d likely be outweighed by 20+ lbs.

Benn isn’t a great fighter, but Tank still wouldn’t want to face a guy weighing over 20 lbs more than on fight night.

Misunderstanding the Offer?

“We made him an offer, which he felt he didn’t want to discuss further,” said promoter Eddie Hearn to iFL TV about an offer he made to lightweight Gervonta Davis to fight welterweight contender Conor Benn.

“It was over the $10 [million guaranteed], but it also had PPV bonuses beyond that, gate bonuses beyond that. So it could’ve been $20 million, could’ve been $25 million. But he didn’t really want to discuss it,” Hearn continued about Gervonta Davis.

“I made him an offer that I felt was an offer that was quite powerful for the fight and could also lead to a lot more than that beyond the basic but, you know…I think he probably don’t really understand the dynamic of the deal, the numbers. I might go back,” said Hearn.

If Tank Davis didn’t understand the amount that he could make from the fight, it’s not too late for Hearn to speak to him to let him know he could make a massive amount of money.

Davis took to social media to share his opinion on Usher’s hug to Alicia Keys

Super Bowl LVIII’s halftime show brought together iconic performers, dazzling displays, and unexpected moments that left viewers raving about it. Amidst the spectacle, R&B sensation Usher stole the spotlight with his electrifying performance, but it was a interaction with Alicia Keys that ignited a flurry of discussion, fueled by boxing champ Gervonta Davis and his commentary.

Decked in all-white attire, Usher commanded the stage with his signature moves, treating viewers to a load of hits that had the stadium rocking.

In a spontaneous move, Usher went off script, drawing Alicia Keys into a brief embrace during their duet performance. The display of hug between the two music titans was intended to convey the spirit of collaboration and mutual admiration, but it was not without its critics.

Gervonta Davis, known for his outspoken nature, took to social media to share his perspective on the incident. In a now-deleted tweet, Davis questioned the appropriateness of Usher’s actions, expressing concern over the speculated intimacy of the moment, particularly given Alicia Keys’ marital status.

Davis echoed the remarks of many people who saw the show
Davis’ remarks sparked a wave of discussion online, with spectators weighing in on the nature of Usher and Alicia Keys’ onstage interaction. Some defended the performers, interpreting the embrace as a harmless display of professional chemistry. Others echoed Davis’ sentiments, suggesting that such displays could be misconstrued.

Despite the controversy, both Usher and Alicia Keys remained focused on delivering an unforgettable performance, showcasing their undeniable talent. The duo’s collaboration was met with widespread acclaim, with fans celebrating their on-stage chemistry and the magic of their duet.

Meanwhile, Gervonta Davis stood by his comments, showing the importance of respect and boundaries, particularly in the public eye. While opinions may differ on the matter, one thing is certain – Usher and Alicia Keys’ gave the world a Super Bowl halftime show to remember.

Bill Haney says Gervonta Davis is a “manufactured” fighter that has brought along during his career against “slow-footed Mexican fighters,” and he feels he lacks confidence in himself.

Bill states that the three-division world champion Tank Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) has been matched against slower fighters throughout his career and has never faced anyone like Devin Haney.

Manufactured Fighter Claim

Although Bill doesn’t say what he means by mentioning his son, it appears he’s talking Tank, never having fought a slick mover who uses the pull-back style and clinches a lot whenever his opponents get close.

It’s valid that Tank has never fought a hit-and-run fighter, but many fighters haven’t. Those types of guys are avoided because it requires a lot of chasing around the ring, and Mayweather Promotions & PBC weren’t going to put Tank in the position of dealing with that type of opponent.

Bitter Motivation?

It’s obvious to some that Bill is still bitter about Tank Davis not being open to moving up to 140 and challenging his son, Devin Haney, for his WBC light welterweight title without any weight stipulations and a 50-50 split.

If Bill is harboring a grudge against Tank for not giving up his A-side privileges, it’s understandable why he’s lashing out. Without Tank, Haney’s options are slim and risky. Fight Subriel Matias and get roasted or move up to 147 and fight Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis” and get destroyed.

Bill states that the more he sees Gervonta, the more he’s convinced that he lacks confidence. That is to say, he thinks Tank is scared of fighting high-level competition, like Devin and other top guys.

Of course, one could flip it around and say the same thing for Haney, who left the 135-lb division without fighting Shakur Stevenson, who rehydrates to 165, which means he’s essentially fighting four divisions outside of his natural frame by melting down to compete at 140.

Lack of Confidence

“Who would have thought that would have been the toughest task for the former face of boxing [Gervonta Davis]. The more I watch him, the less confidence I see in the kid,” said Bill Haney to Shawn Porter’s YouTube channel, talking about Gervonta Davis.

“The kid [Tank] is built up and manufactured against slow-footed Mexican fighters. He’s never fought anyone that resembles Devin,” Bill continued with his criticism of Tank Davis. “The last time we were in the ring together, he got cooked.”

Top Rank boss and Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum is ready to pit his top pugilists against Gervonta Davis.

The Baltimore-bred knockout artist Davis (29-0, 27 KOs) has been dominating his dance partners, but the cupboard of high-profile, in-house opponents PBC could present moving forward is running dry.

Tank has bulldozed the likes of Leo Santa Cruz, Mario Barrios, Isaac Cruz, Rolando Romero, Hector Luis Garcia, and Ryan Garcia since 2020.

Many of the mega payday fights that the WBA lightweight champion would want to entertain would involve Davis and his team working with Arum, who promotes lightweights Shakur Stevenson and Vasiliy Lomachenko as well as super lightweight Teofimo Lopez Jr.

“Tank Davis is an excellent fighter and a big attraction. So sure we’d like to match [Stevenson, Lomachenko, and Lopez] against Tank Davis and see how well they would do. I like our guys to win the fight … All three would beat Davis. I really believe that … but that’s why they do the fights, right? Again, we’re open to any of that,” Arum told BoxingScene.com in an interview.

“I think [Davis] is the real deal. That’s why we’re talking about him. He’s a helluva performer. A terrific athlete, and a terrific boxer, but so are the other three [Stevenson, Lomachenko, and Lopez.]”

Gervonta Davis' plea deal rejected after 2021 hit-and-run crash

Arum alluded that a cross-promotional fight involving Davis would likely need to be financed by the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia and its chairman, Turki Alalshikh.

Top Rank’s shows are produced for ESPN platforms; PBC struck a deal with Amazon Prime last month.

“The way it will probably happen, where everything is happening, is the Saudis … [they] might decide to do the fight, after Ramadan this summer and cut the checks to the fighters. And that ends any kind of discussion of who gets what percentages,” said Arum.

“The stuff about A-side and dictating terms, that’s total and complete nonsense. Once you settle on the money and work out the percentages, then everything else is easy. Everything else is nonsense. But again, if we start talking about A-side and B-side, then nothing happens, they just trade insults with each other, and that’s childish. That’s why a lot of fights haven’t happened because people involved in the sport, sometimes even us, have been very childish arguing about stuff that doesn’t even matter.”

Gervonta Davis - Next Fight, Fighter Bio, Stats & News

Lopez will next fight Jamaine Ortiz on Feb. 8.

Lomachenko is slated to fight George Kambosos Jr. in the coming months for the vacant IBF lightweight title.

Davis and Stevenson do not have any known fights lined up at the moment.

Isaac Cruz has given up on his years-long pursuit of a rematch with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, For now.

The popular lightweight from Mexico City has a new target in his sights. Actually an old one, as Cruz hopes to unearth past business with Ryan Garcia.

“I am no longer waiting on Gervonta Davis/Abdul Wahid (Davis’ chosen Muslim name),” Cruz told BoxingScene.com in a quote provided through Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions. “Ryan Garcia has been calling us out for the last few fights. That’s the fight I want and what my promoter wants for me. Call your attorney, Guadalupe Valencia and quit running, poodle.”

Cruz (25-2-1, 17KOs) has won three straight since his narrow points loss to Baltimore’s Davis (29-0, 27KOs) in a December 2021 WBA ‘Regular’ lightweight title fight he accepted on five weeks’ notice. The 25-year-old contender has applied heavy pressure on a second bout versus Davis, with the benefit of a full training camp for both in preparation for each other.

The cries fell on deaf ears, even though both are under the Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) umbrella and Cruz has risen to the top of the WBA lightweight rankings.

Cruz now turns to Garcia (24-1, 20KOs), who rebounded from an April 22 knockout loss to Davis with an eight-round knockout of Mexico’s Oscar Duarte last December 2 in Houston, Texas.

Garcia has since publicly called for—in order—a shot at WBA junior welterweight titleholder Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero (15-1, 13KOs), a high-profile showdown versus unbeaten two-division champ Devin Haney (31-0, 15KOs), and back to Romero, whom he hopes to face this spring.

A fight between Garcia and Cruz was previously ordered by the WBC in 2022 as a planned title eliminator. Garcia and Golden Boy Promotions publicly expressed interest in the fight. Cruz was unavailable at the time as was already committed to a fight versus Eduardo ‘Zurdito’ Ramirez.

Gervonta Davis Knockouts: Big Fight Weekend Look at the Top 5

With both free at the moment, Cruz believes there is no time like the present to pick up where they left off a couple of years ago.

“Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz was unavailable for various reason,” Sean Gibbons, Cruz’s rep and hype man, told Boxing Scene. “But the time is now. Pitbull has accepted Ryan Garcia’s challenge. This is the fight we want for Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz, no question. So, what’s your excuse now, Ryan?”

Gervonta Davis, the 29-year-old WBA World Lightweight titleholder, recently embraced Islam. Following the footsteps of boxing legends, he underwent a significant transformation. Drawing parallels with iconic figures like Muhammad Ali, formerly known as Cassius Clay, Davis made a profound announcement of his conversion on social media.

The Baltimore Banner reported that the boxer solidified his commitment to Islam by performing the shahada. It is the Islamic testimony of faith, that marked a significant moment in his spiritual journey. In a symbolic gesture, Davis also announced his new Muslim name after converting to Islam. So what is it?

Is ‘Abdul Wahid’ the new name of Gervonta Davis?
To keep it short, yes. On December 24, Gervonta Davis, now Abdul Wahid, embraced his new faith, Islam, in Maryland. His chosen name translates to ‘The Servant of The One,’ a reflection of his commitment to his spiritual journey. The conversion ceremony, including the Islamic testimony of faith (shahada), was conducted under the guidance of Imam Hassan Abdi. He was surprised at Davis’s down-to-earth demeanor despite his renown.

The humility displayed by Davis left a lasting impression on Imam. Beyond the religious community, the boxing champion’s newfound faith has garnered support from the world of combat sports. With former WBC cruiserweight champion Badou Jack extending a warm welcome. Also, the UFC fighter Khamzat Chimaev addressed Davis with his new name as he welcomed him to the religion.

So now it’s to be seen, who’s a bigger inspiration for Davis? Muhammad Ali or Mike Tyson. Both are Muslims but their practices are quite different. Tyson, in contrast to Ali, didn’t change his fight name to his Muslim name, i.e. Malik Abdul Aziz. He kept on being addressed as ‘Mike Tyson’. So will Davis do the same?

Will Davis be officially changing his name?
As of now, ‘Tank’ hasn’t shown any signs of getting his name changed to Abdul Wahid. He has announced his new name, however, he hasn’t expressed distress over the use of his old name. Moreover, even on his social media, there haven’t been any changes witnessed as such that could indicate his wish to be called by his Muslim name.

On his Instagram, his username remains the same: ‘gervontaa’. Even his name is unchanged, as it displays ‘Gervonta Davis’ written on his profile. Even on the X app, it’s no different. His username is still ‘Gervontaa’, while his name remains untouched. So most likely, Davis will be following Mike Tyson’s route and would continue to fight under his old name.

Or, he’s taking things a bit slow as he may be giving some time to his fans so that they can acclimatize to the changes gradually.

Gervonta Davis is the talk of the town. The fans want to see him back in the ring and so do his rivals. The Baltimore fighter is one of the biggest names in the sport and also a pound-for-pound best. Fighting him is an opportunity other fighters around his weight class tend to seek. His next fight? It is not known yet. This is all the more reason for him to get called out.

In a recent turn of events, a fighter makes a bold claim and sends a stern warning to the undefeated boxer asking him to fight. Who is this boxer? The fighter is an American and is as old as, ‘Tank,’ and boasts a record of 13 victories with only two defeats. The pugilist is none other than Jose Valenzuela.

Gervonta Davis gets called out, by who?
In a clip reposted by Fight Hype.TV, he suggested that if given an opportunity, he would fight Davis in a heartbeat and be very technical, starting out with, “If I fought Tank I would be technical about it. I would have my feet under me.” Amongst other claims, he asserted that he foresees him knocking Davis out.

Reflecting on the same, he stated, “You know, I also got long reach. So, I am a dangerous fighter and it wouldn’t be an easy fight for him, I’ll tell you that. And I wouldn’t be surprised if I knocked him out. Edwin, he made me look bad, I think, when he knocked me out. But he took it with a price. The next fight Chris fought, I was robbed, but he took it with a price.”

He then went on to add, “And this last fight you guys saw the kind of power I carry. So you know an extremely well, good camp for the Tank, I can see myself beating him.” It is safe to say that Valenzuela is not short of confidence. Will his prediction come to light? Only time can tell. For the same, it is essential for Tank to face him first. But will he?

What is next for Tank?
The aforementioned question is not certain. However, his boxing trainer, Calvin Ford, did hint that something is being worked upon behind the scenes and it appears to be “Big.” Without explicitly stating his next opponent, the trainer of the undefeated boxer stated, “Right now, something big is coming. I can tell you that. It’s quiet for a reason. They’re trying to seal the deal. It’s gonna make the world turn.”

This development has the boxing world both curious and thrilled. Now, putting the ball in your court, who would be your ideal opponent for Davis? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below.

A recent social media exchange involving boxing champion Gervonta Davis has ignited a storm of controversy.

Davis disclosed his conversion to Islam and stated his plan to change his name to Abdul Wahid. However, a recent exchange of comments with a fan took an unexpected turn.

The initial comment from the fan on a post by boxing journalist Michael Benson highlighted Davis’s elevation to the sole WBA lightweight world champion following Devin Haney’s vacating of the title.

In response, the fan referred to Davis as an “email champion” and alluded to his new name. Davis, in turn, engaged with the fan’s unrelated tweet about taking family members for drinks, responding with a comment that some found offensive.

The exchange also triggered discussions about Davis’ recent conversion to Islam and whether his response aligns with the principles of his newfound faith.

As fans took to social media to express their opinions on the matter, one user remarked:

“Newly practicing Muslim apparently…”

Another quipped:

“That wasn’t very Abdul Wahid of him.”

Some fans criticized Gervonta Davis for what they deemed an insecure and inappropriate post:

“Weird insecure tweet that”

“Bro is a Muslim btw.”

“Already engaging in Haram activities 😂😂😂”

Another fan wrote:

“He can cry all he likes, but it still remains that he’s the current email champion. And guaranteed will never ever fight any current champ in any division between 130 – 140. Never.”

Top Rank Boss Bob Arum names trio he thinks can topple Gervonta Davis
Bob Arum stirred the pot recently, naming three fighters he believes could dethrone reigning WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis.

Since his explosive seventh-round KO of Ryan Garcia in April, Davis has cemented himself as a major draw in the pugilistic world. His star power continues to rise, along with his payday, but according to Arum, there are cracks in his armor.

In a recent interview, Arum, the head honcho of Top Rank Boxing, laid out his dream matchups, picking three contenders he believes possess the firepower to topple Davis: WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson, WBO super-lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez and legendary Ukrainian southpaw Vasyl Lomachenko.

“All three I think would beat Davis, I really believe that. But that’s why they do the fights, they get in the ring to determine who is better. I think that he [Gervonta Davis] is the real deal, that’s why we’re talking about him. He is a hell of a performer, a terrific athlete, terrific boxer, but so are the other three guys you mentioned.”[h/t:Talksport]

The new year has begun with one less WBA belt in existence.

Devin Haney was formally removed as WBA ‘Super’ lightweight champion in the sanctioning body’s latest ratings update which published Tuesday. Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis is now the sole recognized WBA titleholder at the weight, having previously held WBA ‘Regular’ status.

The move was expected, when Haney (31-0, 15KOs) declared in late November that he was prepared to abandon his unified lightweight championship to fully compete at junior welterweight. The announcement was made prior to his WBC 140-pound title win over Regis Prograis. Haney delivered a tour-de-force performance atop a December 9 DAZN Pay-Per-View event from Chase Center in his birth town of San Francisco, California.

Despite his prior declaration, Haney was still the recognized WBA ‘Super’ lightweight champion as of the December 1 WBA rankings and headed into his fight versus Prograis.

Baltimore’s Davis (29-0, 27KOs) has yet to publicly comment on his newfound status as full titleholder. The only recent round of news involving the two-division titlist and boxing superstar was his recent conversion to Islam and that he chose the name Abdul Wahid (“Servant of The One”) upon his acceptance of Allah.

Gervonta Davis changes his name like Muhammad Ali: What's his new Muslim name? | Marca

Monday’s development barely changes things for Davis, whose current title reign dates back to a December 2019 twelfth-round knockout of Yuriorkis Gamboa. The only real change is the absence of a primary title ahead of his belt, which means he is free to further unify the division if that is the road he chooses to travel. The only other active lightweight titlist is Shakur Stevenson, who claimed the vacant WBC belt in a twelve-round, unanimous decision win over Edwin De Los Santos last November 16 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The IBF and WBO belts are both currently vacant. The IBF belt will iikely be at stake in a proposed Vasiliy Lomachenko-George Kambosos fight targeted for this spring. Denis Berinchyk would then become the leading candidate to fight for the vacant WBO title versus an opponent to be determined.

Davis has not fought since a seventh-round knockout of Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20KOs) last April 22 at T-Mobile Arena. The bout was fought at a 136-pound catchweight in a non-title fight, with Davis’ WBA title not at stake.

Team Gervonta Davis Does Not Believe Fight With Jose Valenzuela Would Last More Than Three Rounds - Boxing News

It mattered little to the masses; the fight sold a reported 1.2 million pay-per-view units and generated an estimated $22.8 million live gate atop a Showtime Pay-Per-View that served as the highest grossing event of 2023.

Davis last defended his WBA title in a stoppage win over previously unbeaten WBA junior lightweight titlist Hector Garcia after nine rounds. Garcia (no relation to Ryan) moved up in weight to unsuccessfully challenge Davis last January 6 at MCI Center in Washington, D.C.

No decision was yet made by the WBA as to whether Davis will be ordered to make a mandatory title defense; his last such obligation came in a May 2021 knockout win over then-unbeaten Rolando Romero.

Isaac Cruz and William Zepeda—a pair of contenders from Mexico—are the highest-ranked WBA lightweight contenders. Both have frequently expressed an interest in facing Davis.

Gervonta Davis' plea deal rejected after 2021 hit-and-run crash

Cruz has been teased as a leading candidate to next face Davis. Such a fight would represent a rematch to their December 2021 meeting, won by Davis via unanimous decision which snapped his sixteen-fight knockout streak. Cruz has since won three in a row, including a unanimous decision over Giovanni Cabrera last July 29 in Las Vegas.

Zepeda is due to fight in the first quarter of 2023, though an opponent was not yet identified as this goes to publication. The 27-year-old southpaw earned knockout victories over Jaime Arboleda and Merctio Gesta for his two bouts in 2023.
