The legend of the game made some bad choices outside the ring

Mike Tyson has revealed how he lost his entire fortune ahead of going bankrupt back in 2003.

Tyson is now preparing for a boxing return, facing Jake Paul in Arlington, Texas this summer. The legend of the sport is reportedly set to earn $20 million from the fight, which will be broadcast live on Netflix.

At his peak, Tyson earned as much as $35 million for a fight, and he earned that career-high purse against Lennox Lewis back in 2002. Just one year later, he declared himself bankrupt after losing his life’s fortune.

Tyson has now opened up on his difficulties while speaking to tennis star Nick Kyrgios. He said: “At the beginning, I didn’t handle fame too well. You know because at first you want the fame of being a champion, but you have no control then.

“And that’s when I first started getting in trouble because sometimes I might be walking the streets, they don’t know my mother died or something about my family. I’m hurt and they just jumping in, ‘Hey man, give me a picture. Hey man this. Hey man. I love you. Give me this’.

“I might not be in the mood, so I used to be violent about it. And then, I started getting quite a few lawsuits and I stopped. I’m a glutton for pain, but I stopped. I couldn’t sign anymore checks so. I was always being sued.

“Constantly blew my money away from being sued and going to court and just associating with the wrong people and making bad business decisions. And it was just the whole caboot, pretty much. That was just me getting caught up in a vortex of destroying myself.”

A career of big purses

As one of the best ever, it’s no surprise that Tyson has regularly earned huge amounts. He once earned $6 5million between two fights alone, and was once said to be worth as much as $300 million.

He is now estimated to be worth just $10 million, but that still represents a strong recovery having lost it all. And this summer, he is in line to earn another $20 million as he prepares to fight the youthful Jake Paul.

An amateur Mike Tyson gave the professional ranks a taste of things to come with one epic knockout.

Heavyweight legend ‘Iron Mike’ enjoyed a stellar boxing career, having achieved it all at professional level before retiring in 2005, having reigned as undisputed world champion from 1987 to 1990.

Tyson left his rival flat on his back with a monstrous KO

And his credentials were certainly proven at amateur level, where he won a gold medal at the 1981 Junior Olympics in the heavyweight division.

In the final, the heavy-handed American made a statement like no other with the landmark event lasting just eight seconds against rival Joe Cortez.

Tyson quickly burst out from his corner with just one intention, and began loading up some vicious shots.

But after just eight seconds with Cortez clearly way out of his depth, the 15-year-old at the time landed a crushing right-left combination which sent his opponent crumpling to the canvas.

Cortez was left flat on his back out cold, and the referee immediately waved off the fight while seeking medical attention for the silver medalist.

Tyson’s quickfire KO came as no surprise, with the amateur champion seen as one of the most dynamic punchers to have come through at the time.

He went on to win another gold medal at the 1982 version of the tournament, before making the step to the professional ranks with a huge reputation.

He missed out on the 1984 Olympic Games, but made up for the heartache with a glittering career as a pro. He quickly went from strength to strength, demolishing rivals with ease on his rise to becoming the youngest ever heavyweight world champion aged 20, when he beat Trevor Berbick with another thumping KO in November 1986.

Tyson garnered a fearsome reputation in his amateur career

The feared puncher went on to share the rings with some greats, including Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield whom he lost to, while he beat other names like Larry Holmes and Michael Spinks in a stint that saw him go down as one of the greatest of all-time.

He eventually hung up his gloves in 2005, admitting he no longer had the desire to fight on.

However, in 2020 he returned to face Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition and is now training for another fight, against Jake Paul in July.

Surprisingly the contest has been sanctioned as a professional fight, despite the 31-year age gap between the pair.

Tyson has been posting a series of training clips to justify to fans his return at age 58, but the public have still urged the pair to cancel the showdown.

He has also received a host of medical warnings from doctors over his health if he receives punches as a veteran, but has ignored them to pursue a contest which will count on his record.

Jake Paul and Mike Tyson have been urged to cancel their ‘mismatch’ showdown.

‘Iron Mike’ is set to step back in the ring aged 58 to take on YouTube star Jake Paul on July 20, a fight which has seen him given medical warnings given their 31-year age deficit.

Tyson has been documenting his training in footage posted to social media, with some fans surprisingly impressed by his punch power and suggesting he will beat Paul.

And his new footage crushing the pads with trainer Rafael Cordeiro, has been met by new pleas from fans for Paul to abandon the fight plans.

One commented: “Jake, you can still say no. It’s okay.

Another agreed: “Wow, if just one of those punches lands, Paul will be in the ICU.”

One fan suggested: “Jake’s gonna need to borrow some of those pads from Mike’s trainer.”

Mike Tyson video elicits jokes, concern, praise ahead of Jake Paul bout

A fan observed: “Look at his coaches’ face, he is fearing for his life.”

One even wrote: “If Mike Tyson doesn’t win… this was fixed.”

But not all fans were convinced by the footage, with one writing: “Run Tyson. Get your wind back. You’re gonna need it for this fight trust me.”

One pleaded: “Hey Champ, can you show us a video of you hitting mitts or the heavy bag for 3 mins straight? If not just cancel it!”

Screenshot-2024-04-24-121328.webp

A fan predicted: “I hope you all know Mike isn’t beating Jakey.”

Although a final user concluded: “It’s okay to back out Jake Paul or Mike Tyson, I’m just saying..”

Paul himself even responded to the footage, writing in the comments: “He’s the best ever. The most brutal and vicious, and most ruthless champion there’s ever been. And I will defeat him.”

It is clear that Tyson is still one of the best around in short bursts, but it remains to be seen if he can keep up his work for an eight-round period.

Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson: Tyson's latest as Canelo weighs in on 'show'

The former undisputed champion already suffered a damaging defeat to the end of his professional career losing three of his four final fights before retirement in 2005.

Paul will be the younger and fresher fighter at just 26 despite having far less experience in the ring.

But a proportion of fans are still certain that Paul will lose, after seeing training footage compared side-by-side.

Tyson’s trainer has insisted the veteran is working harder than ever, and will be primed in time for their summer battle.

Tyson and Paul will fight in July

The exhibition boxing match between Jake Paul and former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson is already a global phenomenon, three months before it will be streamed live on Netflix from AT&T Stadium. The showdown will have significant ramifications for the sport of boxing as well as the two fighters — with Paul, a former YouTube star, attempting to make a statement against Tyson, once one of the most feared athletes on the planet.

But after the fight, life will go on for Paul and for Tyson. The latter has spent years cultivating a business and media empire away from the ring, and it received a fresh boost with a surprise announcement on Monday.

An earful…of edibles?
In 2022, Tyson and Evander Holyfield controversially announced a joint venture…selling edibles. The shock stemmed from the 1997 bout between the two boxers, in which Tyson bit off a portion of Holyfield’s left ear — and the edibles, called “Mike Bites,” are manufactured in the shape of a human ear.

On Monday, Tyson’s cannabis firm “Tyson 2.0” reached a deal with pharmaceutical company PHCANN to distribute Mike Bites and other products to German and British consumers in a groundbreaking career move for the 57-year-old boxer.

“I’m excited to make our world-class products available to medical cannabis patients in the region,” Tyson said in a statement. “Together, we’re setting new standards and delivering something that no one else is bringing to the table.”

Tyson, who owns a 420-acre “weed resort” in southern California, has previously stated that he will abandon his marijuana habit in order to prepare fully for his bout with Paul — which will take place in Arlington, Texas, on July 20.

Anthony Joshua is expecting youth to overcome experience when Jake Paul faces Mike Tyson this summer.

The former heavyweight champion, though, admits he is worried about ‘Iron Mike’s’ health as he gears up to fight a man 31 years his junior.

Paul and Tyson will clash in the summer in Texas

By the time Tyson, the youngest heavyweight champion in history, climbs into the ring against Paul he will have just celebrated his 58th birthday.

Meanwhile, ‘The Problem Child’ is in his physical prime at 27 years old and is an active professional boxer with 10 fights under his belt (9-1).

The last time Tyson competed was in 2020 when he faced Roy Jones Jr in an eight-round exhibition – his first appearance in the ring since hanging up his professional gloves in 2005.

By contrast, Paul has boxed four times since last year, though his second bout as a pro came on the undercard of Tyson vs Jones Jr and scored a knockout of former NBA player Nate Robinson.

Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul: Anthony Joshua makes prediction for huge exhibition fight | Evening Standard

When asked to pick a winner in the crossover clash, Joshua told the Jonathan Ross Show, which airs this Saturday on ITV: “He [Mike Tyson] is older now.

“I pray that he comes out healthy. I think Jake Paul [wins] because of youth – that’s the only thing.”

Paul vs Tyson is the latest blockbuster spectacle to see a retired ageing boxer pitted against an influencer.

Three years ago, Paul’s brother Logan fought Floyd Mayweather in a non-scored bout, which paved the way for others to go on and do the same.

Joshua thinks Paul will beat Tyson

Quizzed on his thoughts about the increase in popularity of influencer boxing matches, Joshua replied: “I personally think it’s really good.

“I think the boxing hardcores, they don’t like it because they think ‘Why are they disrespecting our sport?’

“But I think that person brings all these people into boxing which benefits everyone else. Everyone viewing helps.”

Anthony Joshua makes prediction for controversial Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul fight

Paul and Tyson square off on July 20 at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas – the home of NFL side, the Dallas Cowboys.

The fight will be shown live on Netflix for free to all existing subscribers.

Tyson recently confirmed the bout is an exhibition but insisted it will be contested under ‘real fight’ rules and regulations.

Wrestling companies are always looking for athletes from other sports to come into the business. Jake Paul and more could debut in 2024.

There has always been a crossover between the worlds of professional wrestling and athletes. The appeal for the WWE in these athletes is a gateway to more mainstream attention from more popular leagues like the NFL and the NBA. While many may dismiss professional athletes’ involvement in professional wrestling events as nothing more than paid promotional work, many top athletes seem to be genuine fans of professional wrestling in general or WWE specifically and are seemingly enamored by the product.

However, it is one thing for a professional athlete to love wrestling, it’s an entirely different thing for said athlete to lace up their boots and step into the ring. However, that hasn’t stopped some athletes from trying to cross over into professional wrestling. Here are some we could see crossing over.

In 2016, Shield turned pro and has consolidated multiple Middleweight Championships, including the WBA, IBF, WBO, WBF, and the Ring titles. In 2021, Shields also tried her hand at MMA making two appearances for the Professional Fighting League winning her debut fight by TKO but losing the second one by a split decision.

Shields has commented about the possibility of having a WWE match in 2023 stating that she would love to step into a WWE ring and has stated that she feels like could take on the whole division. This certainly fits with the brash and confident personality that she has backed up in the boxing ring.

Several UFC fighters would naturally be able to transition into careers in professional wrestling and Covington is seemingly no exception. The controversial UFC star has made several political statements, openly supporting Donald Trump, and even visited the Trump White House after becoming the interim UFC Welterweight Champion after defeating Rafael Dos Anjos. Covington’s political views are just the tip of the controversial antics of the former Champion, having previously called the country of Brazil, a dump, and insulted Leon Edward’s deceased father during a pre-fight press conference.

In 2020, Covington caused a stir by stating that he may cross to professional wrestling and “make wrestling real again”. WWE Champion Drew McIntyre responded to the statement, which resulted in Covington threatening to take McIntyre’s soul out of his body. Given that Covington has now lost three of his last 5 fights, breaking his foot in his most recent fight, he may be more seriously considered a run in the WWE. The fact that UFC and WWE are under one roof of the company TKO means a crossover is more likely than ever.

Jake Paul Could Always Join His Brother In WWE
Jake Paul – Boxing

Speaking of social media influencers, Logan Paul made numerous WWE before making his in-ring debut at WrestleMania 38, teaming with the Miz to take on Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio. Logan has continued to make WWE appearances, including a reign with the United States Championship. Logan’s brother, Jake Paul has also made appearances in the WWE, during Logan’s Undisputed Championship challenge against Roman Reigns at Crown Jewel.

Instead of following his brother into WWE, Jake has continued working as a boxer and also signed a long-term deal with MMA promotion Professional Fighters League in 2023. Given his brother’s deal with the WWE, it would be surprising to see Jake also make his in-ring debut with WWE.

It is clear for everyone to see that Conor McGregor is coming to the end of his career as an MMA fighter after suffering a brutal loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov and back-to-back losses to Dustin Poirier, breaking his leg in their second fight. During his recovery from injury, the UFC announced that McGregor would be a coach in the 31st installment of the Ultimate Fighter Series, facing off against Michael Chandler.

Given that McGregor has already retired from UFC in the past, and has a history of high-profile clashes with professional wrestlers, there is no reason why McGregor couldn’t trade the Octagon for the squared circle. Though, unlike the others on this list, Conor McGregor has stated that he has no interest in joining the WWE, though he has also called out WWE wrestlers including a social media feud with Paul Heyman.

The former heavyweight champion hasn’t fought for three years

As a former heavyweight boxing champion with 58 career bouts and 50 wins to his name, Mike Tyson is used to getting in the ring. But ahead of his fight with Jake Paul, the veteran admits he is fearing the worst from his exhibition match.

The pair will fight at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on July 20 in a hotly-anticipated bout, which has also attracted criticism due to the massive age gap between Tyson and Paul.

Video thumbnail
Jake Paul’s manager denies alleged rules for Mike Tyson fight

The YouTuber is just 27 years of age and has only 10 fights to his name. Tyson, 57, hasn’t fought in the ring since his last exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr in December 2020, which ended as a draw.

It is no surprise then that Tyson, who has suffered from mobility issues in recent years, is dreading coming against the American fighter. However, he insists this all part of the process before a fight.

“I have a weird personality – I don’t think it’s weird though. Whatever I’m afraid to do, I do it. That’s how it is,” Tyson told Sean Hannity on Tuesday night. “I was afraid of the Roy [Jones Jr.] fight [in 2020].

“I was 100 pounds overweight, I was however old, 54, 53, and I said ‘Let’s do it.’ Anything I’m afraid of, I confront it. That’s my personality. Right now, I’m scared to death.”

Tyson wary of Paul threat
Video footage from Tyson’s training sessions have been uploaded onto social media as a way of dispelling theories that he could struggle to fight against Paul, who has a 9-1 record in boxing.

Paul’s reaction to those clips suggested he might have been wary of the threat posed by his opponent, with Tyson looking sharp in preparing for the fight.

And he explained how he channeled his nerves into helping him feel ‘invincible’: “I always believed that adversity and nervousness pretty much catapulted me into success,” Tyson said.

“If I didn’t have these feelings, I wouldn’t go into this fight. I have to have these feelings to fight. Without them, I would never go in the ring. As the fight gets closer, the less nervous I become, because it’s reality. And in reality, I’m invincible.”

But he admits that he knows Paul’s YouTuber days cannot be taken into account when he steps into the ring: “I saw a YouTube of him at 16 doing weird dances. That’s not the guy I’m gonna be fighting,” he added. “This guy is gonna come, he’s gonna try to hurt me, which I’m accustomed to, and he’s gonna be greatly mistaken.”

Here is the response from Jake Paul’s camp to the allegedly proposed rules for the fight against Mike Tyson

Recently, there were reports of the alleged proposed rules for the Mike Tyson vs Jake Paul fight on July 20th and the Youtuber’s manager just came out to claim those are fake news. These allegedly proposed rues included bigger gloves, 2-minute rounds, no winner unless it’s a KO, both fighters getting tested for anabolic steroid use, and no judges. But Jake Paul’s manager Nikasa Bidarian uploaded a video that claims these rules are nothing but false information. He wated to offer the only details of this fight that have been confirmed to this day, which have nothing to do with these allegedly proposed rules.

Video thumbnail

Mike Tyson is looking scary again
Bidarian is part of Jake Paul’s crew and he has been monitoring Mike Tyson’s training sessions. He uploaded a video where he offers an update on that and on alleged tickets being sold for the vent. He said: “Breaking news, there is no news. Stop spreading fake news, there’s no truth regarding Jake Paul-Mike Tyson. Here’s what is true, 1. Mike Tyson is in unbelievable shape and training like he hasn’t in many, many years and is looking scary for Jake Paul. 2. There are no tickets for sale. 3. Over 85,000 people have signed up to get access to tickets when they go on sale, this is going to be a historic event.”

Despite this new information, there is still concern for Mike Tyson’s well-being due to his age and the dangers he could face for getting hit in the head. People like Dana White or Eddie Hearn have been very vocal against watching Mike Tyson getting into the ring with the Youtuber. At the end of the day, we will only know how ready Mike Tyson is for a fight like this until he steps on that ring. But the training videos of him with that ripped physique show him looking scary and still with some of the same speed he had during his prime. People would love to know about the rules that will be approved for this fight, stay tuned for an update.

Mike Tyson had an interesting run-in with a security guard, who momentarily refused to let the legendary boxer to his seat at the Miami Open as play was going on.

Mike Tyson took a break from training for his highly-anticipated fight against Jake Paul. The legendary boxer stopped by the Miami Open to enjoy some tennis, but found himself in an awkward run-in with a security guard.

Mike Tyson
Mike Tyson was stopped by a security guard at the Miami Open

On Tuesday, Tyson attended the Miami Open to watch the quarterfinal match between No. 27 Victoria Azarenka and Yulia Putintseva. Yet upon trying to get to his seat, he was stopped by a security guard who refused to let him pass until there was a stoppage in play.

Sky Sports commentators directed their attention to Tyson, who seemed to grow slightly annoyed while having to wait on the steps before being seated. One of the announcers heralded the guard as “brave,” jokingly asking, “You know this is Mike Tyson?”

“Iron Mike” has not been shy about expressing his love for tennis in the past. His daughter Milan grew a knack for the sport at just three years old and has developed into a rising star, even training with Serena Williams’ former coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

Mike Tyson
Mike Tyson is a huge tennis fan

While speaking with Mouratoglou back in 2022, Tyson shared that tennis had changed his life and “broadened my horizons.” “Our whole life has changed over tennis,” he said. “I thought we were doing well and everything, and everything we were doing was making money, but that’s not bigger than my daughter playing tennis.

“She’s bigger than everything in our life now,” he continued. “I see her transcending into something she would never have before if she hadn’t got involved in tennis.”

Milan isn’t the only tennis player that Tyson enjoys watching, either. The 57-year-old frequents matches at the US Open and Indian Wells, among other professional tournaments.

www.hollywoodreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/...

This isn’t the first time that Tyson has faced an issue getting to his seats at the Miami Open. At last year’s tournament, he delayed the final between Elena Rybakina and Petra Kvitova after arriving fashionably late.

As Rybakina was going through her serve routine, the umpire noticed Tyson was still standing and called for all spectators to take their seats. Once the former heavyweight champion reached his chair and sat down, the crowd around him erupted in cheers. An additional break ensued, with play finally resuming after the noise died down.

This year’s Miami Open has been full of surprises, with several big names falling in the early rounds. On Monday, No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek lost to Ekaterina Alexandrova (6-4, 6-2). Just several hours prior, U.S. Open champion and No. 3 seed Coco Gauff was knocked out by No. 23 Caroline Garcia in three sets (6-3, 1-6, 6-2).

Following a brief break from boxing, Tyson’s attention will likely re-focus on his upcoming bout versus Paul. The two will step into the ring on July 20 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with Netflix broadcasting the event.

Tyson is making a boxing comeback against social media sensation Paul in the summer and he is training hard for the fight according to his wife, Lakiha Spicer

UFC boss Dana White is confident Mike Tyson is preparing for his Jake Paul fight properly after speaking with the boxing legend’s wife.

Mike Tyson will take on Jake Paul

Boxing icon ‘Iron Mike’ is preparing for a comeback fight against social media star Jake Paul on July 20 at the 80,000 seat AT&T Stadium in Texas. Tyson will be 58 by the time he steps foot in the ring and there is a 30-year age gap between him and Paul, who wasn’t even born when ‘Iron Mike’ had a record of 45-2.

Although UFC boss White admitted he doesn’t want to see Tyson still fight, he is glad to hear the ring legend is taking it seriously. “I love Mike Tyson and I’m not a fan of anybody fighting at our age, but he’s a grown man obviously and he’s going to do what he’s going to do. I talked to his wife a couple of days ago and he’s taking it serious and he’s training for it,” White told Lex Fridman.

“I think Mike Tyson is one of the most unique guys who have crossed over, any of the other fighters from his generation have no way of making money without fighting and Mike Tyson has made a lot of money outside of fighting. Tyson still has that aura that you could be in a restaurant, you’d be like ‘Holy f***, Mike Tyson is here.’

Jake Paul - YouTube

“He still has that aura and energy in a room, he makes lots of money outside of the ring but I think he ends up getting these offers that he can’t refuse.” Paul has a professional record of 9-1 and his third fight took place on the undercard of Tyson’s last outing, an exhibition against Roy Jones Jr. in November 2020.

Paul recently ditched mega-fights against popular opponents in a bid to build up his record, knocking out unknown boxers Andre August and Ryan Bourland in his last two fights. White mocked Paul by bringing up the influencer’s only defeat to Love Island star Tommy Fury and jokingly said he will fight Clint Eastwood after his bout with Tyson.

Mike Tyson: Boxing's Legendary Champion - Spartans Boxing Club

“Jake Paul did fight a kid his age and he lost. I just saw this thing on the internet yesterday and I reposted it where it says if he beats Mike Tyson he’s going to fight with Clint Eastwood next, Clint Eastwood is 93 years old,” White told Henry Cejudo and Kamaru Usman on the Pound 4 Pound podcast.
