The former Olympic skier reveals that she called time on her career because the risk ‘outweighed’ the reward

Lindsey Vonn has admitted to being in pain ‘all the time’ since retiring from pro ski racing in February 2019, as the Olympic gold medalist revealed that she called time on her 19-year career because the risk ‘outweighed’ the reward.

The 39-year-old, who ranks third amongst female skiers with the most World Cup overall championships of all time (4), blew her right knee twice, tore her ACL, also twice, and suffered bad meniscus damage as well as a fractured tibial plateau amongst other injuries throughout her years as a competitor.

When asked if she had thought about all of the long-term damage to her body while still out on the slopes in the years prior to her retirement nearly five years ago, Vonn told the ‘In Depth with Graham Bensinger’ show: ‘I didn’t really think about it…

‘But now I think about it,’ she added with a giggle. ‘Yeah, I mean, I’m in pain all the time. Like I work out not because… I mean I love working out and I think it helps me you know get over ski racing. But also, I have to work out.

‘If I don’t work out, my knee is in extreme pain. Like, I have a hard time walking the dogs for 10 minutes. Because if I don’t strengthen the muscles around my knee, then…

‘It’s bone-on-bone right now and if I’m not strong enough then it’s unreal painful. So… And that’s just one of many joints and injuries I’ve had so I’m really not looking forward to what things look like in 20 years.’

Vonn, who was the first American woman to win the gold medal in downhill at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, confessed that she’s thinking about whether she needs a knee replacement and when exactly.

‘This is life now,’ she said of her physical health. ‘So, how do I manage this to live with as little pain as possible? And I’m trying to make it through ’cause if I had an even partial knee replacement, I need another knee replacement in 10 years.

‘So, how many times, like, I don’t know is there a maximum like knee replacement you can have? I don’t know that.

‘I’ve already had more stem-cell injections then like anyone they’ve ever done and it’s not really helping so I don’t really know what my options are at this point but I’m hoping someone comes up with something.’

Reflecting over comments made the night before her final race, when she said it’s ‘really scary to think about not having something I love so much but I also want a future,’ Vonn said: ‘Yeah, I mean, that’s exactly how I felt and I still feel, you know. I still have to look forward to the future, you know.

‘But at what point does the risk outweigh the reward? And I reached that point.

Lindsey Vonn, the former alpine skiing champion, has had a career worth looking up to for the little aspirants. With her 4 overall world championship titles and three more in the Winter Olympics, what presents the champion best isn’t just the impressive number by her name but the resilience that tags along. Throughout her 15-year career and beyond, Vonn underwent numerous injuries and over 10 surgeries, but the obstacles did not waver the love of sport for the icon.

It was back in 2019 that Lindsey Vonn retired from skiing due to injuries. ‘Upset and resentful’ stated Vonn over her decision. Nonetheless, after continuing on with an optimistic spirit across various roles, the champion has often been seen back on the skiing trails; reminiscing the long-held joy.

Lindsey Vonn shines on skiing trails
Despite retiring years ago, Lindsey Vonn has remained no stranger to skiing. Last year, the icon skied Kitzbühel at night, went over the turns of Aspen, and claimed her downhill position back numerous times over. Today, continuing with her interest and remaining resilient towards her last year’s surgery, Vonn has come back on the tracks. “Blue bird day with perfect groomers = ripping some fast turns!! Through difficulties and uncertainties, the champion has emerged stronger since last year.

The champion to aim for more
In the latter half of last year, Lindsey Vonn underwent yet another surgery concerning her knee. The skiing icon had crashed her body back in 2018, which left her with a torn ACL and MCL, and suffered joint damage. The incident invited upon multiple treatments and careful treading. The latest one involved bone repair, keeping her off the courts for about four to five months. However, upon completion of the required time, Vonn was back on adventure, well and better, as was evident from her social media.

The grappling collaborative presence of The Rock and Lindsey Vonn started when the former picked Vonn as someone who could keep up with him in the gym. Since then, the two have formed a remarkable bond, including a brand partnership. Today, as Vonn continues to endorse Johnson’s ‘Project Rock,’ the skiing icon has carried persistent excitement.

Lindsey Vonn shares excitement with a sneak peek
Vonn joined The Rock on his joint sportswear line with Under Armor back in 2019. A series of newer campaigns and collections have frequently made it to the fans ever since, with the skiing legend often at the forefront. Today, as she took to her Instagram stories for an update, the pattern continued. “Sneak Peek of Project Rock gear… love the back!” Vonn wrote, sharing a glimpse of her workout sessions. In the shared clip, Lindsey Vonn adorned a beige breathable co-ord set of shorts and a top that held a twist design with a criss-cross strap, making it sturdy.

The World Champion’s involvement was highlighted as she starred in a campaign for the brand’s Family Collection. After years into the partnership, Vonn continues to be a worthy face for the brand, aiming to encourage and pay tribute to athletes, veterans, and aspirants alike.

The skiing icon’s inspirational presence
“I knew that I wanted to be great “, were Lindsey Vonn’s words as she recalled her childhood. The attitude has led Linsey not only to stand as one of the most decorated alpine skiing stars but also to help inspire other people looking up to her. During her visit to the Girls Athletic Leadership School (GALS) last year, Vonn backed the stance as she imparted messages of self-care and resilience. “I know who I am” and “I know that I matter,” framed the skiing star’s message as she aimed to guide the growing demography.

The US alpine skiing legend Lindsey Vonn continues to be an inspiration for young kids. One of the greats of the game, growing up, she took inspiration from the Olympic Skier Picabo Street. Now, after becoming one of the most decorated skiers with 82 World Cup victories and 3 Olympic golds, she is the one today’s young kids look up to.

As the New Year unfolds, Vonn is being greeted with newer, and yet familiar joys of life. Despite the odd bad moments with fans, she continues to be the kind she is, and this time, young kids have become the source of her happiness. Not only that, the wholesome moment has taken Vonn back to her childhood days.

Kids take Lindsey Vonn back to her childhood
In the latest update on Threads, Lindsey Vonn updated fans about a meet-up with young aspiring skiers. But the heartwarming moments had a nostalgic moment on the 39-year-old, taking her on a trip back to her childhood. “Great to see all the kids at @sscvail today. Loving seeing kids enjoy being on the mountain like I did when I was their age”, she captioned her post. Lindsey shared a series of pictures where she could be seen posing with the aspiring skiers.

Seeing the kids enjoy the mountains, Vonn remembered her own days. She was taught skiing by her grandfather during family vacations and later enrolled in Ski Club Vail for alpine skiing lessons. Before enrolling in the racing program, Vonn had already skied down Minnesota, Colorado, and Oregon tracks. Earlier during an interview, the Olympic Champion also revealed how her mother played a crucial role in her skiing career.

Vonn shares a skiing anecdote from her childhood
Vonn stands as one of the world’s most decorated alpine skiers. She was determined from her early childhood days to become one of the greatest, and greatest she became. “I knew that I wanted to be great “, were her words. But like her first teacher, grandfather, her mother also played a crucial role in her skiing career.

In an interview with The New York Times, Vonn revealed how her mother would take her for skiing. “I would be in the back under a sleeping bag, and she’d (her mother) be driving and singing along to some Eric Clapton tape“, she shared. They would drive for 16 hours from their home to Vail where Vonn would take the alpine skiing lessons. Like she would take inspiration from Picabo Street, today’s generation dreams to be as good a skier as Vonn was.

The start to 2024 wouldn’t feel complete without Lindsey Vonn making an appearance on the sidelines of another sporting event. Though she is no longer competing professionally, she still makes a habit of attending other pro sporting events and supporting fellow athletes, who like her, have dedicated themselves to their sport.

This time, the former professional alpine skier headed to the San Francisco 49ers game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday afternoon. Though the home team lost by one point following a Rams two-point conversion in the fourth quarter, Vonn simply seemed pleased for the chance to attend a game on a beautiful, sunny day in Levi’s Stadium.

She dressed the part expertly, too. The 39-year-old stepped out in a dark wash, flared pair of denim, a tan knit crop top and a stunning caramel-colored wool coat. With a pair of brown pointed-toe boots, she rounded out the outfit that was, in our opinion, one of the best examples of winter sideline style that we’ve seen in recent weeks and months.

“Game day in ☀️ San Fran!!” Vonn enthusiastically captioned a photo she shared on her Instagram from the afternoon outing.

In typical fashion, the trip to California is only the latest stop for Vonn, who has a habit of hopping from place to place—and sporting event to sporting event—throughout the year. Though we’re sure she’s enjoying her time on the West Coast, we are sure to see her back in Colorado soon for some more seasonal skiing.

“I like feeling strong, and when I feel physically strong, I feel so much more mentally strong.”

Lindsey Vonn, 39, started her week off with a satisfying sweat sesh. On Monday night, the retired Olympic skier posted an Instagram video of her lower body workout routine, and it was filled with killer leg exercises.

Lindsey gave her followers a preview of her exact workout routine in a quick Reel that showed each movement. The Olympic gold medalist started her workout with single leg jumps to activate her glutes, hamstrings, and quads, before diving into some reverse barbell lunges to work her glutes, as well as her core stability and hip mobility. She continued with kettlebell swings, a full-body movement to get her heart rate going while also working her upper body, core, and lower body.

Next, Lindsey crushed some hex bar squats, which increase quad and back strength, before completing kettlebell lunges to further work her quads and single-leg strength. She ended her sweaty workout with some cardio on a stationary bike. Phew!

While Lindsey was focused on her intense workout, her pup, Lucy, was cheering her on in the background

“Last night’s workout session to start the week off right 💪🏻 Had a furry partner with me to check my form lol 🐶 thx Lucy ❤️@vonndogs,” Lindsey wrote in the caption.

Naturally, Lucy wasn’t the only one supporting the Olympian’s efforts—Lindsey’s fans cheered her on in the comments. “💪 hardest worker in the room!,” one person wrote, while another said, “Keep going 💪👏.” Personal trainer Gunnar Peterson was impressed with Lucy’s assistance, saying, “Please let Lucy know I’m hiring. @lindseyvonn.”

Unsurprisingly, the alpine ski racer takes fitness very seriously, and she shares her workouts to her Instagram often. You’ll see her crushing a full-body Christmas Eve workout with weighted squats and lunges, hitting the slopes, finding a gym while she’s on the road, and even playing a pre-Thanksgiving dinner tennis match.

Even her New Year goals are centered around her physical health. On January 4, she posted a video of a full-body workout with the caption:

“Why hello 2024… LFG 💪🏻 Goals this year =
1) deeper squats and better range of motion
2) better absorption
3) core strength improvement
4) better mobility
5) bigger cardio capacity + endurance strength

It’s a lot considering my knee but the last two surgeries went really well so let’s see what I can do! 🤞🏻💪🏻.”

While Lindsey loves a difficult workout, she exercises for the sake of her mental health. “I’ve always found a lot of mental strength and confidence through working out, especially since I’ve retired from skiing,” she told Women’s Health in 2021.

Lindsey will also never turn down a challenge. “I just like pushing myself,” she shared with WH. “I like feeling strong, and when I feel physically strong, I feel so much more mentally strong. When I work out, I feel like I’m healthier and more confident. I’ve achieved something, no matter how small.”

When it comes to her diet, Lindsey likes to start her day with blueberries and a sugar-free Red Bull before chowing down on some scrambled eggs, she told WH. Her lunch and dinner are packed with protein, and she’ll switch between yummy meals like chicken with kale, salmon, and zucchini pasta with bolognese meat sauce, per WH.

One of the most decorated skiers in history, Lindsey Vonn has indeed redefined the term “fast” in ski racing. The heroic trailblazer athlete embodies the spirit of grit. In a testament to that gritty self, Vonn has already outlined his fitness and adventure goals for the year 2024. As the new year started, Vonn has already outlined. Now came the time of looking back and it was not only to the just concluded year.

It seemed that as the year started, Vonn took time to reminisce once again about the making of herself. Alongside that, the alpine skiing legend also sowed the seed for the hopes of the future.

Lindsey Vonn showcases girl power
Lindsey Vonn recently took to her Instagram to post a series of pictures showcasing the victorious moments of the legend. However, the last picture of the series was a standout. Vonn was seen with a group of young girls in a muscle-flexing stance. Vonn captioned it as, “Unleashing Girl Grit 💪🏻 It’s on all of us to support, inspire and build our next generation… To those who inspired and supported me, I am eternally thankful🙏🏻 I can’t wait to see what the girls of tomorrow will achieve… I know they will impact our world in a positive way 🌎❤️.” Interestingly, these are exactly what Vonn’s foundation namesake foundation does.

Lindsay Vonn Foundation is built with the central mission “to instill grit in young girls nationwide”. The foundation looks to seal those overlooked opportunities that may be the winning bait in the future. Its mission statement reads, “Grit is at the core of our identity. It is the determining factor that can set ambitious girls apart from everyone else.” Vonn herself defines it.

Winning 82 World Cups along with three Olympic medals, Vonn is an embodiment of success in skiing. She has also won four women’s World Cup overall championships (2008–10 & 2012). Retiring from the field four years ago, she also marked her vibrant presence as an entrepreneur, and best-selling author, despite facing obstacles. And her grit has dazzled in all those.

Lindsey Vonn to Retire - The New York Times

The legendary grit of Lindsey Vonn
Even though Lindsey Vonn has taken retirement from professional competition, her life story is a motivating phenomenon for all young girls. According to Vonn, “I knew that I wanted to be great and to really make a difference in the world,” and none other than Olympic alpine ski racer Picabo Street is her source of inspiration whom she met as a young girl. She further adds, “Everyone deserves a chance to believe in themselves and to follow their dreams.” Vonn still chases those dreams as was evident recently.

In her first Instagram post of 2024, Vonn posted a clip of herself skiing in the darkness of night. One Instagram user tried to advise her to “settle done and have kids”. Vonn took it head-on to give a befitting answer, only to prove that women are not all about raising a family. With her latest post, Lindsay Vonn once again highlighted this notion of hers and her never-ending belief in womanhood.

US alpine skiing legend Lindsey Vonn recently came across a comment to her latest post that didn’t sit right with her. The Olympic gold medalist counted down all the good and the great things she saw in 2023. However, the opinionated comment marred her experience of looking back at her 2023 highlights.

The new year brings new possibilities as well as new problems, and Lindsey Vonn encountered hers fairly early. However, the skiing champion expertly handled the words directed at her and gave a fitting reply to the comment. In fact, Vonn was lauded for the way she tackled the situation by several of her fans.

Lindsey Vonn takes care of uninvited words
Lindsey Vonn added a new video on Instagram displaying her speeding through a ski track. The video showed Lindsey Vonn finishing with a velocity of 133 km/h while skiing in the night. Instead of appreciating the great speed achieved by Vonn, a comment asked her to slow down. The comment said, “Time to slow down, settle down, and have kids!”

The uninvited comment raised a lot of eyebrows, but the 39-year-old dealt with it quite gracefully. Lindsey Vonn replied, “mmm really? Not a fan of this comment for many reasons… but mainly bc you think that bc I’m a woman I need to slow down and settle down to have kids? Not everyone does things the same way or in the same time frame buddy. But all the best to you in 2024.”

While the commenter ignored her great skiing ability, Lindsey Vonn made her stand clear swiftly, just like she does while skiing past the ice-clad curves and turns. In fact, She has been living her life on her terms post-retirement.

Lindsey Vonn Is Feeling Like a 'Boss' in Suede Brown Power Suit and Effortless Glam - Sports Illustrated Lifestyle

Vonn continues to reign beyond the slopes
While Lindsey Vonn may have retired, her tank is still overflowing with fuel. The skiing expert has taken on several different sports and is mostly seen outdoors with various sporting icons. Moreover, it didn’t take her long to go on adventures as soon as she got discharged after her knee surgery. While kids may or may not be on her agenda, Vonn definitely will continue living her life to the fullest. And while doing this, Vonn has the support of her fans. The latest tussle is another testament to it as many of them stood beside her.

One of them said that while everyone can have kids, speeding through a ski track like her isn’t an easy feat to achieve. Some advised Vonn just to ignore the haters. One fan said a straight-faced thank you to Vonn for her reply. Got any thoughts on this? Pour them down in the comments.

Skiing is all about finding your balance. As one of the most decorated American skiers of all time, Lindsey Vonn was pretty good at it, racking up three Olympic medals and 13 World Championship medals over the course of her 19-year career. Now that she’s retired, balance is still a goal of hers, but it looks a little different now than when she was racing down mountains.

Lindsey Vonn

In 2023, Vonn tells SheKnows, she spent more than 150 days away from home, traveling for work. “And that’s in a lot of different countries, as well,” the Olympic champion-turned-businesswoman says. “I need to be able to balance it better… There’s always going to be work to be had, but it’s a matter of finding time for yourself.”

Relaxation was on the schedule over the holidays at Vonn’s house in Utah, but for the former elite athlete, that doesn’t necessarily mean rotting in her bed every day. Vonn tries to get to the gym “as much as I can,” she says, even if it’s a 10-minute workout in her hotel room while she’s on the road. “That is something that helps me mentally as well as physically,” Vonn explains. “It helps get my equilibrium right when I can get into the gym first thing.”

Unplugging is also key. “Reading a book for 20 minutes or watching my favorite TV show for an hour, just simple things like that where I can just disconnect and recharge,” Vonn explains.

Vonn also tries to get as much sleep as she can. As a longtime sufferer of insomnia, she knows the value of it.

Lindsey Vonn's Mental Health | Banyan Treatment Center

The ski champion began experiencing insomnia after undergoing knee surgery in 2013. She’d torn her ACL and MCL and had “a bunch of fractures,” Vonn remembers. “I was just in a lot of pain.” On top of that, Vonn says, “I knew if I wanted to get back to the Olympics that next winter, that I had to sleep. And the combination of the pressure of sleeping and the pain that I was in just got me in this really bad downward spiral of not sleeping.”

For Vonn, that meant six to seven hours of sleep a night, altogether. For a professional athlete who was used to sleeping nine, 10, or 11 hours every night, plus naps, that wasn’t nearly enough.

“When you’re not sleeping well, you start the day off behind,” Vonn says. “It took me so long to get going in the morning.” She would force herself to do an interval workout on her bike first thing in the morning “just so I could get my brain to function,” Vonn remembers. The insomnia got even worse after Vonn retired in 2019. “I wasn’t physically as active, so I didn’t have that physical tiredness that I would normally get,” she recalls. “My mind was always going and I was anxious.”

Lindsey Vonn Launching Production Company: Après Productions

Vonn now uses a prescription sleep medication, QUIVIVIQ. She says it helps her “fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer,” and the effect that’s had on her life has been massive. “I wake up and it’s a completely different feeling now than it used to be,” she says. “I don’t feel like I’m already behind the eight ball. I’m ready to conquer the day and that’s what I need. I’m a go-getter, I’m a do-er, and I need sleep to be able to do that.”

Just as important is Vonn’s nightly wind-down routine. When she’s getting ready for bed, she’ll light a candle or, if she’s on the road, use a room scent that helps her feel like she’s at home. She’ll read a book, take her QUIVIVIQ, and finally shut her eyes for the night.

“Everyone wants something magical,” Vonn says of her sleep solutions. “You still need to take care of yourself. You need to have these routines that are gonna help you get in the right state of mind to sleep.”

Lindsey Vonn on Mental Health After Retirement, Support Dogs

As an athlete and a self-described “pretty stubborn” person, Vonn thought she could take care of her sleep issues herself. Finally talking to her doctor about it was “the best thing I’ve ever done,” she says, and she recommends anyone else struggling with insomnia or other sleep issues to do the same. “Most people just think not sleeping is OK and it’s just a part of life and we should just deal with it, and it’s absolutely not. It’s not OK.”

Vonn’s goal in sharing her insomnia story is to encourage others to seek help and find their own solution. “Without sleep, you’re not your best self and I definitely wasn’t,” she says. “Definitely life has changed a lot for me now.”
