Ferrari could be set to make a huge signing announcement that could reshape the landscape of Formula 1 for years to come.

The Italian team have already made a major signing in 2024, as they announced that Lewis Hamilton would be joining Charles Leclerc as their driver lineup for 2025 onwards, with Carlos Sainz being released.

Canadian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton backs Max Verstappen will pass race wins record

Hamilton and Leclerc joining forces will be one of the strongest lineups in the history of the sport, but team principal Fred Vasseur could be set to make an even bigger signing in the coming days/weeks.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Vasseur has met with departing Red Bull chief engineer Adrian Newey ahead of move to Ferrari.

The report reads: “Fred Vasseur has met with Adrian Newey in London and it is likely that Newey will be joining Scuderia Ferrari. An official announcement is imminent. He may start working for the team as soon as 2025 in preparations for the 2026 regulations.”

Newey is arguably the most influential man in all of F1, having designed the most dominant car in F1 history last year for Red Bull, and his 2024 car appears to be just as far ahead as last season.

With new regulations set for 2026, Newey’s departure is a disaster for Red Bull as they will have to significantly change their car design without the genius of the legendary designer.

This could also push Max Verstappen out of the team, with Mercedes set to offer the world champion a ‘world record contract’ to replace Hamilton.

Red Bull announced Newey would be leaving the team on Wednesday morning following growing speculation the 65-year-old would be joining Ferrari.

The team released the following statement: “The Team announces that Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey will leave the Red Bull Technology Group in the first quarter of 2025.

“The engineering supremo will step back from Formula 1 design duties to focus on final development and delivery of Red Bull’s first hypercar, the hugely anticipated RB17.

“He will remain involved in and committed to this exciting project until its completion. We’d like to thank Adrian for our achievements in the time that we have worked together so far. He has been instrumental for us in achieving a remarkable seven Formula One Drivers’ and six Constructors’ Championship titles – totaling 118 victories and 101 poles including the STR 2007 pole and victory,” They concluded.

Newey also is expected to have interest from the likes of Aston Martin and McLaren, but Ferrari remain the firm favourites to land the Brit’s signature.

Fernando Alonso rocked the Formula One driver market on Thursday by signing a new contract with Aston Martin. The veteran had been considered a strong contender for a seat at either Red Bull or Mercedes, with Lewis Hamilton departing the Silver Arrows to join Ferrari in 2025.

Alonso had reportedly been on a three-man shortlist drawn up by Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. There were also suggestions that the Spaniard could replace Sergio Perez at Red Bull.

Max Verstappen’s future remains unclear, despite a loose insistence that the Dutchman remains committed to Red Bull for the remainder of his contract until 2028. Wolff has been openly flirting with the idea of making a shock move for the three-time world champion from rivals Red Bull.

Vettel decision timeline revealed after F1 return rumors

Sebastian Vettel is set to decide in the coming ‘days and weeks’ about a potential return to F1, according to reports.

It’s just two years since Vettel called it a day and retired from F1, but the German has been linked with a sensational return.

Vettel is believed to be a possible candidate to replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, after the German constructor missed out on Fernando Alonso, who is signing a contract extension at Aston Martin.

The four-time world champion has also been rumored to be of interest to Porsche’s World Endurance team as well, and their head of operations has teased his decision could be imminent.

Speaking to Motorsport-Total.com: “We have read in the media that he is in talks with several people. But we only know that he has not yet decided what he will do.

“We also do not know if he will run again, where and when. That will be known in the coming days or weeks.

“So we also don’t know if he will race with us in the future.”

Former F1 ace warns against growing street circuit expansion
Former F1 champion Mario Andretti has voiced his concern about the growing number of street circuits on the calendar.

Speaking to Sports Illustrated, Andretti said: “I think we have to be very careful to keep the traditional circuits that have made Formula One what it is today, and not ever forget that. Many of these traditional circuits like Silverstone have upgraded to the standards that you expect.

“And again, I’m one of those individuals that value so much where we came from and let’s not ever forget that.

“It’s fine to go forward and bring on new things, but never forget where we came from. So in my opinion, nothing will substitute Silverstone at the moment in England. ”

Full 2025 schedule confirmed by FIA
Elsewhere in the 2025 schedule, it’s a return to Australia for the opening race of the season, while the USA maintains its three-race status.

The British GP remains in its usual mid-summer spot, while the season concludes in the UAE on December 7th.

Lewis Hamilton’s dream already slashed for first season in Ferrari car
Lewis Hamilton’s first season as a Ferrari driver won’t include a dream visit to Africa for the 2025 F1 season.

The continent has once again been snubbed on the calendar – something Hamilton has previously been outspoken about.

Speaking last year, the seven-time world champion said: “There’s one more race we need and that’s going to be Africa. We have all the other continents and why not there? So that’s the one I’m working on pushing right now.”

Ferrari making new ‘push’ for Adrian Newey
Ferrari are reportedly ‘pushing’ once more to take highly-rated engineer Adrian Newey from Red Bull.

Auto Motor und Sport report that Ferrari are making a fourth attempt to sign Newey, who has previously admitted to turning down the job on several occasions.

The Italian team want Newey, the mastermind behind Red Bull’s successful cars, to work alongside Lewis Hamilton from the 2025 season.

Who could benefit from Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin contract?
Fernando Alonso’s new Aston Martin contract surprised many F1 onlookers.

The Spaniard had been linked with Red Bull and Mercedes but decided to pen a multi-year extension with his current team.

That decision is likely to have a ripple effect throughout the grid.

Express Sport’s Fraser Watson took a look at five drivers who may benefit from the deal.

Fernando Alonso’s ‘enduring talent’ highlighted
Martin Brundle has hailed Fernando Alonso’s ‘enduring talent’ after the Spaniard penned a new Aston Martin contract.

Alonso, who is 42, has signed a multi-year extension to quash rumours of a move to Mercedes or Red Bull.

Brundle tweeted: “That man has incredible motivation and staying power. And enduring talent. Exceptional, in any sport, in any era.”

Mercedes ‘finalise’ Max Verstappen contract
Mercedes have reportedly finalised Max Verstappen’s salary and bonuses in the event that the Dutchman agrees to join from Red Bull.

Toto Wolff has publicly admitted that the Silver Arrows would like to sign Verstappen, who has been linked with an exit from Red Bull amid a power struggle behind the scenes.

According to Auto Motor und Sport, Mercedes chiefs have already planned the terms of the contract that they will offer to Verstappen if the 26-year-old agrees to enter surprise talks.

Wolff lost Fernando Alonso from a reported three-man shortlist to replace Lewis Hamilton on Thursday. Alonso has agreed to remain with Aston Martin.

Verstappen’s future at Red Bull was uncertain around the time of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, as he hinted that if Helmut Marko left the team, he would consider doing so as well as Red Bull dealt with the ongoing power struggle within the team and the Christian Horner allegations, which he denied.

Verstappen appeared to hint that his future remained at Red Bull until his contract expires in 2028 in Australia, but Wolff has insisted that a link-up with the Dutchman “needs to happen.”

Vettel to Le Mans
Sebastian Vettel has taken part in a Le Mans preparation test for Porsche Penske at Aragon in Spain.

The four-time F1 World Champion has not raced since his retirement after the 2022 season, although was notably in the paddock in 2023 in Japan to launch a nature project at Suzuka.

No official program beyond the hypercar test has been announced by Vettel, but would you like to see the 53-time Grand Prix winner head to Le Mans to take on the twice-around-the-clock enduro?

Max Verstappen has been taking time to test in a different category of motorsport recently in aid of friend Thierry Vermeulen.

The Red Bull driver has been assisting Vermeulen in improving the setup of his Emil Frey Racing team machine – which runs in the German GT3 category DTM.

Verstappen has had a marked effect on both car and driver, with the second half of last season seeing Vermeulen pick up seven top ten finishes in ten races – having failed to score any in the first six races of the season.

Although the Dutchman has shared interest in racing in other disciplines, it’s unlikely he prefers to leave F1 for DTM at the first opportunity, instead eyeing a shot at the Le Mans 24-hour race.

Frey-Hilti: Watching him work is extremely fascinating
According to Emil Frey Racing team manager Lorenz Frey-Hilti, Verstappen’s traits have made him a pleasure to work with, even if the move was confusing at first glance.

“Max is very straightforward, a very down-to-earth guy, very nice, with no star quality,” he told German outlet Blick. “Watching him work is extremely fascinating. After one or two laps, he’s already reached top speed and works extremely meticulously. You can feel how immense his passion for racing is.

“There are countless GT3 teams. It was a great honor to be asked [to work with him]. Even if, at the beginning, we didn’t really know what was behind this request.

“He makes a very tangible contribution to our being faster. Also, because it adapts very well to what Thierry needs. Of course, Thierry is Max’s friend, but Max wants to see performance. As a coach, he gives him strict and clear directives.”

Verstappen starts his quest for a fourth consecutive Formula 1 world championship from the end of this month at the Bahrain Grand Prix, from 29 February – 2 March.

If his RB20 turns out to be as dominant as last year’s car, the rest of the grid could be in for another testing and unexciting season.

Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton are two of the biggest stars in F1. They have a combined total of 10 world championships between them and lit the F1 world on fire with their 2021 world championship battle. They started their careers in very different eras, but still, these two generational talents have crossed paths, and treated fans to some brilliant racing action over the years. Their rookie seasons, on the other hand, were extremely contrasting, but unique in their own way.

Verstappen, now 26 years old, made his F1 debut with Toro Rosso back in 2015. Regarded as an exceptional driver who was aggressive and mature beyond his years, Verstappen had relatively less single-seater experience. But his performances, which reminded Franz Tost (former Toro Rosso boss) of Michael Schumacher, convinced Helmut Marko to sign him up for Red Bull’s sister team.

Hamilton, on the other hand, made his debut 8 years ago, in 2007, driving for McLaren. He was a part of their program for quite a long time and took the world of F1 by storm in his debut season by putting up a commendable title fight.

Statistics-wise, their rookie seasons could not have been more different.

Lewis Hamilton vs Max Verstappen – Rookie season

Analyzing Hamilton and Verstappen’s rookie seasons
At first glance, it is evident that Hamilton’s rookie season was miles clear of Verstappen’s in pretty much every aspect. One thing has to be taken into consideration, however. It is the fact that Verstappen was driving for a team that was essentially a backmarker, scraping into the midfield.

The Dutchman’s teammate was Carlos Sainz, and the former was consistently better than him. Sainz finished P15 with 18 points to his name, three places below Verstappen. But just taking into account that Verstappen was driving for a weaker team cannot be done. The magnitude of the waves caused by Hamilton’s rookie season, especially considering the situation he found himself in, made it all that special.

Why Lewis Hamilton’s rookie season was special
Hamilton became the first black driver in the history of F1 when he joined the grid in 2007. He was put up against Fernando Alonso, who had won the 2005 and 2006 titles, as his teammate. The Spanish driver was not easy to deal with, and since McLaren was a race-winning team, there was added pressure on him to perform.

Despite being a rookie, Hamilton went on to give Alonso a run for his money. They went toe to toe for the title, along with Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen. Unfortunately for Hamilton, Raikkonen finished in P1, but the Briton was just one point short of a historic rookie season.

He finished level on points with Alonso, and the Oviedo-born driver, unsettled with Hamilton’s rise in the team, joined Renault the following year. In 2008, Hamilton did not make any mistakes. He won his first world title, the first of seven.

Red Bull and Max Verstappen have F1 in a chokehold, but Guenther Steiner is one of those who believes the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris will be able to compete in 2024

Guenther Steiner is certain Red Bull’s rivals will be in with a shout of toppling Max Verstappen this year.

No-one could touch the Dutchman last year when he was armed with the all-conquering RB19. And there are fears that the situation will not change until the next major change to car regulations in 2026

Max Verstappen and Red Bull enjoyed record-breaking dominance in 2023

But Steiner seems confident that the balance of power could shift before then. The former Haas boss pointed at the progress other teams made throughout the 2023 season as reasons to be hopeful that the competition will be much closer this year.

Asked for his opinion on the situation at the front of the grid, Steiner said: “That will end. This is a period in my opinion… I think the teams next year, some of them will catch up. Look at what McLaren did last year, they caught up pretty quick.

“Any race it can come that somebody catches up because the regulations stayed stable. There is a limit [on] what you can develop and it’s just [that] everybody is going to [reach] that point.

“Then, for sure, in 2026 I think the cars are even newer, with the new regulations, engine regulations, [so] there will be a complete change in everything in 2026 in my opinion. I think the sport will stay interesting.”

The point Steiner made about teams getting closer to the performance ceiling of the current regulations echoes what Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said at the end of last season. He too admitted that the gap between his team and their rivals is likely to close, because the champions have far less room to improve.

Horner said: “I’m fully expecting – with stable regs and diminishing returns for us because I think we got to the top of the curve quicker than others – the field is going to converge.

“There’s always a reset as you go into the following year, and I’m convinced that you’ll see a lot more cars that perhaps look like an RB19 philosophy. If you stand still in this business, you tend to be going backwards. And I think that we have got up that curve quicker than others. But we’re into a law of diminishing returns.”

Even Verstappen is aware that he is unlikely to have it as easy as he did last year again. He said: “The others will improve their cars and get closer to us. I don’t think it’s that realistic to achieve that win rate again. But that’s fine. To already have a season like we’ve had is insane… The others are not stupid. They are all learning.”

Max Verstappen has dominated F1 over the past two seasons while Mercedes have been forced to settle for scraps.

Former Mercedes CEO Nick Fry believes that Max Verstappen could beat the rest of the field – including seven-time world champion and former title rival Lewis Hamilton – in equal machinery and that he would still win, even if he was driving a ‘s**tbox’.

F1 Grand Prix of Italy - Previews
Max Verstappen has been the man to beat in F1 over the past two seasons

Verstappen and Hamilton shared one of F1’s greatest title battles in 2021 with the World Championship going down to the final lap of the final race in Abu Dhabi. However, rather than enjoying another close fight the following year, Red Bull enjoyed a major performance gain on Mercedes, leaving the two rivals some distance apart.

Instead, Verstappen was left fighting Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc before Red Bull’s impressive development trajectory left the Scuderia in the dust and he claimed a second successive title. The 26-year-old then proceeded to take things up another notch in 2023, winning 19 out of a possible 22 Grands Prix as he broke record after record.

Speaking to OLBG, Fry said: “Johnny Herbert’s idea of having a one-off race where everybody drives the same car would be a good one if it was practical! Those kinds of ideas have been toyed with in the past, but the issues lie in the sponsorships, which are so closely tied to drivers and cars. That’s where it gets difficult.

Lewis Hamilton still holds hopes that he can win an eighth World Championship

“Unfortunately, I would have to say that Verstappen is showing that he is the best driver at the moment, and I don’t think it would matter much. It could even play into his hands because he’s shown he’s good enough to be very adaptable and would probably drive any of the cars better than his competitors.

“I heard someone say once ‘If you can drive, you can drive anything’. I don’t think it would matter if you put Max in a s***box or a Red Bull car, he’d probably still beat the rest of them. He’s very adaptable. I don’t think it would change much, sadly.”

This prediction will be treated as nothing less than an insult by Hamilton, who still believes he has what it takes to fight the three-time world champion for F1’s greatest honor, provided Mercedes can produce the required machinery to compete with Red Bull.

The Silver Arrows are undergoing a major shift in design philosophy this winter as they look to claw back ground in the development race, but it is a tall order to produce a car worthy of beating a Red Bull team that finished with over double Mercedes’ 409-point tally in 2023.

It is suggested that Michael Schumacher’s team favoritism had an indirect influence on Max Verstappen from the start of his Formula 1 journey. Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, observed the preferential treatment given to the top driver, which he did not experience himself. Subsequently, he imparted this lesson to his son, instilling the mindset of aspiring to be the best in the team to be given the number one priority.

Jos believed that Schumacher received preferential treatment due to being a superior driver in 1994 when they raced together at Benetton. The unequal treatment may have left a lasting impact on Jos, a sentiment echoed by former F1 team manager Graham Watson, who recognized Jos as a “gifted driver.”

Michael Schumacher - Ferrari

Speaking to Dutch magazine Formule1.nl, Watson revealed:

“I think that Jos [Verstappen] felt that Michael Schumacher had better material and was favored.

“I had the impression that Jos had difficulties accepting that, because he also was a very gifted driver.”

Watson believes that Jos did not receive fair treatment at Benetton. This has contributed to Max’s profound understanding of this aspect of the sport- to win over his teammate first.

Therefore, if you take notice, Max has consistently demonstrated high competitiveness against his Formula 1 teammates. A recent example is Sergio Perez, whom he has defeated on most occasions over the past three years.

Max Verstappen - Christian Horner - Adrian Newey - Red Bull

“First Beat Your Teammate”
In 2015, when Max embarked on his Formula 1 journey with Toro Rosso, Watson held the position of team manager. It was during this period that he observed the young driver embodying the lessons inherited from his father, prioritizing becoming the team’s focal point. He added

“Flavio had a strong bond with Michael, both sporting-wise and personal.

“That’s why I think Jos imprinted on Max very early on, that the first thing that you have to do is destroy his teammates. And we have seen that in recent years.

“It has to be your team, you have to be the man around whom it revolves. I’m convinced that you now also see this with Max: first beat your team mate, then win the title.

“To this day, I don’t think that Jos got a fair treatment at Benetton. And that has partly ensured that Max understands that aspect of the sport very well: he does not need better equipment, he wants the same equipment, talent will do the rest.”

Toto Wolff says he agrees with Formula 1 rival Max Verstappen that the sport is pushing the limits in terms of the sport’s ‘show’ factors.
Verstappen, who is dominating the sport with Red Bull, has voiced his opposition to show-business elements like sprint races and Las Vegas-style off-track events.

Wolff sides with Verstappen over F1 'show'

“The way I see it, Max is a purist and thinks about Formula 1 in much the same way as I do,” Wolff, who heads and co-owns key Red Bull rival Mercedes, told Italy’s La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“We think Friday and Saturday are about preparation and qualifying, and then on Sunday you have the main course, where you look forward to the start.”

However, Wolff says he is also realistic about the things F1 commercial rights holder Liberty Media has been doing to ramp up the sport’s ‘show’ appeal.

“You have to be open to changes,” Wolff said.

“We all love traditions, even Stefano Domenicali does. But we also need to reach new audiences and make the sport more modern for young people.”

Much more important to Wolff, who has signed on to remain Mercedes’ team principal at least until 2026, is that the Brackley based team returns to the very front in F1.

“We really have to climb Mount Everest,” said the Austrian, “because Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren are very strong. And 2026 is already around the corner.

“The most encouraging part is being part of that transition and using that to try and win again,” Wolff added, referring to the sweeping car and engine changes looming for 2026.

“Putting all of our energy on 2026 is dangerous, though,” he admits. “In the past some teams have done this to catch up and failed.

“You should always take on as many challenges as possible, because you learn from them. Red Bull is at the forefront in terms of package, including the driver, but it will be fun to try to beat them as early as 2024 or the season after that,” said Wolff.

Mercedes’ ace card, he added, is the full return of James Allison to the technical director role – having let Mike Elliot go last year.

Max Verstappen: F1 – Red Bull Athlete Profile

“James is one of the most intelligent people I have ever met,” Wolff said. “It helped him to take a step back for a year, distance himself and return after Mike’s period.

“I couldn’t have hoped for anyone else to technically guide this team.”

Lewis Hamilton desperately wants to add an eighth F1 world title to his collection, but at 39 time is running out for the Mercedes driver and Max Verstappen is dominating right now

Jenson Button is adamant Lewis Hamilton still has what it takes to finally secure that elusive eighth Formula 1 crown.

Lewis Hamilton is 39 and will wave goodbye to F1 in the coming years

The Brit thought he’d done it in 2021 but was controversially denied in Abu Dhabi, Max Verstappen taking the glory instead. And the two seasons since have been all about the Dutchman and his Red Bull team.

Mercedes, meanwhile, have been off the pace. They have struggled to provide Hamilton and team-mate George Russell with a car capable of competing with Verstappen and so the seven-time world champion has gone more than two full years without a single race win.

That is the hurdle he must get over first, to add to the 103 F1 victories he has already garnered in his remarkable F1 career. After that, Hamilton might still be able to dream of what would be a record-breaking eighth title.

Lewis Hamilton explains change of heart by staying in F1 past his 40th birthday | Formula 1®

If Mercedes can up their game, then Button is adamant his old McLaren team-mate still has what it takes to do it. “When you’ve won for so many years and then suddenly that’s taken away from you, it can work in two different ways,” said the 2009 world champion.

“One, you are just like, ‘Well, there’s no point anymore, I want to retire, I’ve been at the peak for so long and now I’ve not won a race in two years’. But also it can make you more hungry to get back to that, and Lewis is in that position right now, I think.

“Lewis is as good as ever I would say in terms of his outright speed, but also now he seems much more comfortable in himself and confident in his ability, so he makes fewer mistakes. So he’s even better now than he was five or six years ago.

“That’s tough [for his rivals]. If he gets a car that’s competitive enough to fight for victories, when someone is that strong and that confident in themselves it’s difficult to beat, as you can see with Max Verstappen right now.”

How Lewis Hamilton should already be a 10-time World Champion | RacingNews365

Former F1 racer Christijan Albers, on the other hand, has spotted signs of Hamilton losing patience with his current situation. “Hamilton looked quite frustrated at the end of the [2023] season. I can imagine that too,” he wrote in Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

“Sure, he’s had years where he beat everyone, but has now gone two full seasons without a win – that’s going to eat at you. He wants [to win] more and more, but struggles with the fact that the Mercedes is not going faster. Then, at the end of the year, you are exhausted and tired. He hasn’t had that boost that you need for a while.”
