Mike Tyson gave a typically humble response after Deontay Wilder boldly claimed he would “kick the hell” out of a prime version of ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’.

Wilder, who recently slumped to a unanimous decision against Joseph Parker after surviving a barrage of overhand rights and left hooks, previously bragged about the idea of beating a younger ‘Iron’ Mike.

Back in 2018, when TMZ specifically asked then-WBC heavyweight champion Wilder if he would stand a chance against Tyson, he responded: “Yes.”

‘The Bronze Bomber’ then went on to claim that he fears no heavyweight, past or present. “Me vs Tyson in ’86, I’d kick the hell outta that guy,” he said without hesitation.

“Listen, I’ve got to keep it real. I know people always go back to the old school or look at the new school and there’s no school where I’m not No 1 on Earth.”

Two years later and Tyson responded to Wilder’s bold claim. Speaking to TNT Sports, he said he was unsure if the Alabama-born fighter would have beaten him but admired the 38-year-old’s confidence.

“I don’t know [whether I’d beat him],” he said. “I love the fact that he thinks that, because that’s the way I would think as well.

“He’s supposed to think that way, he is the heavyweight champion of the world and that’s something very special.”

Tyson certainly remained humble in front of the BT cameras but back in 2018, he was once again asked if Wilder could have beaten him in a fight. “I don’t think so,” he replied.

Former British heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis was far more vocal in his response to Deontay Wilder’s comments.

“I just heard Deontay Wilder said he would destroy a young Mike Tyson,” he said.

“My thoughts are that it’s easy to talk until you actually get in the ring. I like Wilder but he’s never been in there with someone that ferocious who truly wants to break his ribs with every punch. I don’t see it.

“I love Wilder’s confidence… you need that to sit atop the heavyweight division… he’s hungry and shows up in probably best shape in division… but there’s levels to it… and he’s still adding to his arsenal.

“My best advice to the entire crop of young heavyweight champs is to focus on being the best of YOUR era! Out of respect and reality. It’s unprovable. Of course people asked, but I found no need to speculate or compare myself to my idol Ali or any other of the past greats.”

Lewis added: “History will decide your place among the all time greats… so go out there, clean up the division, defend your title, reign supreme and your work will speak for itself.”

Mike Tyson has made a new prediction for the upcoming Tyson Fury versus Oleksandr Usyk fight but has caveated it with the warning that he ‘could be wrong.’

After many months of speculation, a firm date was finally announced for the first undisputed heavyweight match-up in 24 years. Fury and Usyk will come to blows on February 17 when the WBC, WBC, IBF and WBO belts, plus the lineal title, will all be on the line.

The fight was originally planned for December 23 but in light of Fury’s battle with MMA fighter turned boxing novice Francis Ngannou – who enlisted ‘Iron’ Mike to help him train and has since been ranked by the WBC – it was pushed back to give him time to recover.

As such the excitement is already building for when the two best in the division come together. The fight presents Ukrainian southpaw Usyk with a chance to become undisputed in a second division following his achieving that feat down a cruiserweight, a similar achievement to one made by Evander Holyfield.

Speaking to FightHub TV, Tyson was asked who he thought would come out on top – and is picking ‘The Gypsy King’.

“I’m gunna look forward to that fight. I’m going with Tyson Fury, I think he’s going to overpower him, catch up with him and overpower him, that’s what I think but I could be wrong.”

Tyson, who was used to being the smaller man throughout his heavyweight career, was asked about the impact of facing shorter opponents.

“Little guys are difficult to fight ’cause they’re harder to hit ’cause they’re smaller. He runs a lot, he moves a lot, Tyson’s probably gunna have a few rounds to get used to his moments but it’s gunna be difficult, he’s very small, very fast.”

Whatever happens, the boxing world doesn’t have long to wait to find out.

Mike Tyson is seen by many as a once in a lifetime fighter.

He possessed freakish power, a unique style and an aura that had many of his opponents defeated before they even entered the ring. Tyson still holds the record as the youngest ever champion in boxing’s blue-ribbon division and has now heaped praise on a current heavyweight who he believes fans won’t see the like of again.

There was once genuine belief that ‘The Baddest Man On The Planet’ may never be beaten, until that fateful night against Buster Douglas in 1990.

Similarly, there are plenty of pundits and experts who feel the same about the current champion, Tyson Fury, whose size and skill continue to be a puzzle to the rest of the contenders in the division.

In an interview with Fight Hub TV, ‘Iron’ Mike labelled the current WBC Champion, who was named after him, as a ‘rare’ talent.

“He is rare, he is just rare. He’s once in a lifetime.

To be that successful [at that size], there has always been big guys that maybe look obese or overweight, but they have never been that successful.”

One man who some fans believe could have what it takes to defeat ‘The Gypsy King’ is the unified WBA, WBO & IBF champion, Oleksandr Usyk. The Ukrainian is also undefeated and is aiming to become just the second fighter in history to become undisputed champion at both cruiserweight and heavyweight, joining Evander Holyfield in the exclusive club.

Fury-Usyk will take place on February 17th in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, topping the event billed as ‘Ring of Fire’ with undercard details set to be announced in due course.
