Wrestling companies are always looking for athletes from other sports to come into the business. Jake Paul and more could debut in 2024.

There has always been a crossover between the worlds of professional wrestling and athletes. The appeal for the WWE in these athletes is a gateway to more mainstream attention from more popular leagues like the NFL and the NBA. While many may dismiss professional athletes’ involvement in professional wrestling events as nothing more than paid promotional work, many top athletes seem to be genuine fans of professional wrestling in general or WWE specifically and are seemingly enamored by the product.

However, it is one thing for a professional athlete to love wrestling, it’s an entirely different thing for said athlete to lace up their boots and step into the ring. However, that hasn’t stopped some athletes from trying to cross over into professional wrestling. Here are some we could see crossing over.

Claressa Shields Could Be A Future WWE Champion
Claressa Shields – Boxer

Claressa Shields 3

Claressa Shields is a decorated boxing champion, winning Olympic Gold Medals in her weight class at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. In 2016, Shield turned pro and has consolidated multiple Middleweight Championships, including the WBA, IBF, WBO, WBF, and the Ring titles. In 2021, Shields also tried her hand at MMA making two appearances for the Professional Fighting League winning her debut fight by TKO but losing the second one by a split decision.

Shields has commented about the possibility of having a WWE match in 2023 stating that she would love to step into a WWE ring and has stated that she feels like could take on the whole division. This certainly fits with the brash and confident personality that she has backed up in the boxing ring.

Colby Covington Is A Natural Heel
Colby Covington – MMA Fighter

Colby Covington loses

Several UFC fighters would naturally be able to transition into careers in professional wrestling and Covington is seemingly no exception. The controversial UFC star has made several political statements, openly supporting Donald Trump, and even visited the Trump White House after becoming the interim UFC Welterweight Champion after defeating Rafael Dos Anjos. Covington’s political views are just the tip of the controversial antics of the former Champion, having previously called the country of Brazil, a dump, and insulted Leon Edward’s deceased father during a pre-fight press conference.

In 2020, Covington caused a stir by stating that he may cross to professional wrestling and “make wrestling real again”. WWE Champion Drew McIntyre responded to the statement, which resulted in Covington threatening to take McIntyre’s soul out of his body. Given that Covington has now lost three of his last 5 fights, breaking his foot in his most recent fight, he may be more seriously considered a run in the WWE. The fact that UFC and WWE are under one roof of the company TKO means a crossover is more likely than ever.

Hanna Cavinder – Basketball

Hanna Cavinder is one-half of the Cavinder twins alongside Haley who both played college in Fresno State and Miami. Both the Twins have also grown a large following on social media and signed NIL deals with WWE in 2021. However, in 2023, Haley announced that she would be returning to NCAA competition, playing for TCU, while Hanna continued her work with WWE. In July 2023, the twins appeared at a SmackDown in Orlando, Florida.

During the meeting, the twins met Wade Barrett and Grayson Waller. The two filmed an entrance in front of an empty arena as well as filming additional material at the performance center, and appeared on a podcast talking about how they wanted to be the next Bella Twins.

Jake Paul Could Always Join His Brother In WWE
Jake Paul – Boxing

Jake Paul physical transformation

Speaking of social media influencers, Logan Paul made numerous WWE before making his in-ring debut at WrestleMania 38, teaming with the Miz to take on Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio. Logan has continued to make WWE appearances, including a reign with the United States Championship. Logan’s brother, Jake Paul has also made appearances in the WWE, during Logan’s Undisputed Championship challenge against Roman Reigns at Crown Jewel.

Instead of following his brother into WWE, Jake has continued working as a boxer and also signed a long-term deal with MMA promotion Professional Fighters League in 2023. Given his brother’s deal with the WWE, it would be surprising to see Jake also make his in-ring debut with WWE.

Daniel Cormier Has Made A WWE Appearance In The Past
Daniel Cormier – MMA

Daniel Cormier

Former MMA Superstar Daniel Cormier is a former UFC Champion, winning the title in the Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight divisions. Cormier would have two memorable fights with Jon Jones for the Light Heavyweight Championship, losing the first bout by Decision, and losing the second bout before it was overturned by the CSAC. Cormier would finish his MMA career with back-to-back losses to Stipe Miocic.

Cormier is a long-time fan of WWE and professional wrestling, with Cormier working with WWE in 2022 as a special guest referee in the Fight Pit match between Seth Rollins and Matt Riddle at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view. In 2023, Cormier would present several WWE panels ahead of WrestleMania 39, including an interview with another former UFC Heavyweight Champion and WWE wrestler, Brock Lesnar. Now that Cormier is finished with the Octagon, maybe WWE can entice him to wrestle in one of their rings.

Israel Adesanya Paid Tribute To The Undertaker At UFC 276
Israel Adesanya – MMA

Israel Adesanya cracks his knuckles in the UFC octagon

Israel Adesanya is an accomplished MMA fighter having won the UFC Middleweight Championship twice with five successful title defenses. Adesanya also had a single fight in the Light Heavyweight division, losing to Jan Blachowicz. At UFC 276, Adesanya paid homage to the Undertaker ahead of his fight with Jared Cannonier. The Nigerian-New Zealand kickboxer wore a black wide-brimmed hat and carried a silver urn to the octagon while Undertaker’s music played through the speakers in the arena.

Unbeknownst to Adesanya, WWE executives Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon, and Triple H were all in attendance at the event. Given that UFC’s parent company, TKO, now owns WWE as well, perhaps we can see more of the promotion’s MMA fighters making their WWE in-ring debuts.

Conor McGregor Always Gets People Talking
Conor McGregor – MMA

Conor McGregor stares at the ceiling after losing at UFC 196

It is clear for everyone to see that Conor McGregor is coming to the end of his career as an MMA fighter after suffering a brutal loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov and back-to-back losses to Dustin Poirier, breaking his leg in their second fight. During his recovery from injury, the UFC announced that McGregor would be a coach in the 31st installment of the Ultimate Fighter Series, facing off against Michael Chandler.

Given that McGregor has already retired from UFC in the past, and has a history of high-profile clashes with professional wrestlers, there is no reason why McGregor couldn’t trade the Octagon for the squared circle. Though, unlike the others on this list, Conor McGregor has stated that he has no interest in joining the WWE, though he has also called out WWE wrestlers including a social media feud with Paul Heyman.

Savannah Marshall has followed her rival Claressa Shields to the PFL where she will now compete in MMA in a bout that now looks certain to be made

Claressa Shields’ biggest rival has followed her to mixed martial arts after signing with the PFL. Savannah Marshall has been announced as the latest boxer to move over to MMA, with her debut already set in the PFL – where she could eventually be reunited with Shields in a fitting end to their 10-year rivalry.

Shields and Marshall had been seen as the two best prospects in boxing heading into the 2012 Olympics, where the latter defeated the American, handing her her first loss of her amateur career.

She went on to boast an incredible 64 wins to just one loss, coming against Marshall, before both turned professional with talks of a fight for years finally coming to a head in 2022. Shields was able to exact her revenge in their professional bout – winning by unanimous decision as the two shared words of respect after the bout.

But since then, the two have gone back and forth on social media and after wins of their own, with a future fight seemingly likely – and now, potentially in a different sport.

The PFL announced Marshall will fight in Newcastle on June 8, with the PFL already announcing their intentions of a future bout with Shields.

A PFL statement read: “Savannah and Claressa Shields competed in one of the most-watched women’s boxing matchups in history when they first fought, and now with Savannah’s MMA debut, the two are on a collision course for a rematch wearing four ounce gloves and settling the score in the PFL SmartCage.”

The PFL have made a number of impressive signings of the last 12 months, including former UFC champion Francis Ngannou and YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.

Paul is reportedly set to make his PFL debut at some point in 2024, however no bout has yet been announced with the 27-year-old currently scheduled to face Mike Tyson in July.

Claressa Shields talks during a press conference for her fight against Hanna Gabriels of Costa Rica on April 18, 2023 in Detroit, Michigan. Shields and Gabriels attended to promote their June 3, 2023 fight at Little Caesars Arena.

Last weekend she won her 3rd MMA fight in Saudia Arabia.

The GWOAT will be celebrating her victory tonight at Poprox located on 2nd Street in Flint from 9p.m. to 2 a.m..

Shields will be available for photos and autographs at the celebration.

In a massive development, former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson is rumored to be in talks to take on MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko in a boxing match in Saudi Arabia. The update comes from the MMA Pack on Instagram. A handful of hours ago, they shared a post on the platform informing their followers about the negotiations between the two parties.

Mike Tyson vs. Fedor Emelianenko boxing match negotiations are underway and targeted for later this year in Saudi Arabia,” wrote MMA Pack. Fedor Emelianenko, a 47-year-old Russian mixed martial artist, last fought in the Octagon in February 2023, while 57-year-old Tyson had his last appearance in the ring on November 29, 2020, against Roy Jones Jr in an exhibition fight. Emelianenko holds a 41-7-1 MMA record compared to Mike’s 50-6-0 professional boxing record.

After losing to Ryan Bader at Bellator 290, Emelianenko emphasized the end of his career in MMA. However, he did not mean combat sports in general because now the MMA legend wants to take on Mike Tyson in a boxing match. He spoke about the same in an interview with the MMA Hour.

Fedor Emelianenko has been ready for Mike Tyson for a while
While appearing in an interview with Ariel Helwani back on 10 August 2023, ‘The Last Emperor’ claimed, “MMA is done, 100 percent. I’m not going back to MMA. I want to try myself in boxing. I think that’s going to be interesting.” Emelianenko further added that he had seen the fight between Tyson and Jones Jr, so “Mike Tyson would be an interesting fight.”

A fight between them isn’t totally out of the question since Mike had previously expressed his desire to get back in the ring for the right amount of money. And given the fact that Tyson has an enormous following, people would clamor to buy the tickets for his fight. What’s more, Emelianenko also had a date in mind for the fight.

During the interview, Emelianenko had suggested that he would have been happy to fight Mike in the undercard of the Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou fight held in Saudi in October last year. He added, “I heard that Mike Tyson is going to help Francis Ngannou to prepare for (his Fury fight), so he’s probably in good shape too,” said Emelianenko.

While that date has long gone, if the rumors from MMA Pack turn out to be true, it wouldn’t take long for the powers that be in Saudi Arabia to drum up a whole new event for Tyson and Emelianenko. Would you like to see Mike Tyson enter the ring one more time? Who do you think would win?

In August 2023, Claressa Shields revealed that she signed a multiyear deal with the PFL and would return to MMA in 2024. In this context, while she is set to step into the PFL SmartCage this year, ‘T-Rex’ hopes to win a championship in the MMA and display her improved skills. The CEO of PFL announced they were privileged to welcome “the most dominant” Shields.

On February 24th, in an event titled ‘Seize the Throne’, PFL champions will square off against Bellator champions in the cage. In one of the undercards of the event, Shields has been confirmed to feature. She will compete against a fighter out of Miami, Florida. Here is all you need to know about Shields’ upcoming fight.

The Professional record of Claressa Shields’ upcoming opponent
As Claressa Shields returns to MMA in the Lightweight division, she will face Kelsey DeSantis. While Shields is 1-1 in MMA, DeSantis is 1-2-0. DeSantis made her professional debut in March 2013 against Al-Lanna Jones; losing the fight via split decision, DeSantis stayed away from the cage for a decade. Then in September 2023, she returned against Amanda Bell to lose the contest via unanimous decision.

Claressa Shields signs multi-year deal with PFL for MMA bouts | AP News

Following the loss to Bell, in October, DeSantis faced 28-year-old Kathleen Nelson who was only making her professional debut. Likewise, with someone as inexperienced as Nelson, DeSantis won the match via KO in the first round. On the other hand, Claressa Shields has had only two fights in the cage. In June 2021, Shields won in a 3rd-round KO against Brittney Elkin who arrived with a 3-fight losing streak. However, in the same year, when Shields faced younger fighter Abigail Montes, ‘T-Rex’ lost via decision.

Anyway, given the records of the fighters, on paper DeSantis, 35, doesn’t seem to be a very tough opponent for Shields. Meanwhile, being 7 years younger than DeSantis, Shields, 28, will certainly have an advantage on February 24th.

“Excited” Claressa Shields hopes to hold championships in boxing and MMA
Claressa Shields hopes that on returning to PFL SmartCage this year, she will win a title in MMA. As per ‘T-Rex’, her goal is to become the first athlete to “hold championships in boxing and MMA simultaneously.” In her opinion, she has grown a lot since her initial fights in the PFL. As a result, the 28-year-old finds herself excited to display the skills she has acquired over the years. “I am excited to return to a fighter-first organization and I can’t wait to return to the PFL SmartCage,” said Shields in August 2023.

Hopefully, Shields, the no. 1 on ESPN’s pound-for-pound list, will be able to offer her fans the show they desire this February. Anyway, what do you think of Shields’ upcoming opponent DeSantis? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
