Paige Spiranac falling in love with golf again after struggles: ‘I equated my score to my self worth’

Golf influencer Paige Spiranac has been open about her endeavors into the professional side of the sport and in choosing to take a different route to reach the levels to where she is today.

Spiranac is one of the most-followed influencers of any sport – boasting more than 4 million followers on Instagram, more than 1.5 million on TikTok and another 1 million on X.

On Sunday, she got candid about her pursuits in the sport in a post on X.

“I played junior golf, college golf and a year professionally. After that stretch I mentally couldn’t handle playing golf and especially keeping score,” she wrote. “I equated my score to my self worth. I know it sounds silly but competitive golf really beat me up emotionally.

“But I’ve found that passion again! I’ve started tracking my scores and grinding on my game. I’ll keep you posted here on my journey!”

She added that she shot a 73 at Austin Country Club.

Spiranac opened up last year to her Instagram followers on trying to get an LPGA Tour card.

“Played pro for a year out of college,” she wrote on Instagram. “Was as highly ranked junior golfer. Full ride to a D1 university were I was first and second team all-conference. Had 1 pro win on a mini tour, made the cut in the Scottish Open, and made money in all but two tournaments that year.

“Never made it on the LPGA. People don’t realize how much goes into playing pro golf. It’s a mental, physical and financial grind.”

She was also asked about her relationship with the LPGA competitors.

“Some of them are really cool and I’ve known for awhile. Some really hate how I present myself and the game on social media,” she wrote.

“Empowered women empower other women so I’m hopeful we can just get the f— over it one day soon. I hold no ill will against anyone and understand we have a difference of opinion. However we are all doing our part to bring awareness to the game in our OWN way. Bringing one another down only hurts us and the game. I would love to collaborate with more women on tour and in media to showcase the immense talent out there.”

Caitlin Clark has been one of the biggest stars of this year’s college basketball season. She set an all-time scoring record for the NCAA and took the University of Iowa Hawkeyes to the championship game of the March Madness tournament for the second year in a row. Then, former UConn player Breanna Stewart claimed Clark couldn’t be the GOAT without a national title. Meanwhile, Hall of Famer Lynette Woodard, who previously held the NCAA scoring record, believes Clark’s use of three-pointers meant she didn’t actually break the nearly 50-year-old record.

However, Clark has a fan in Paige Spiranac, who has not been immune to unfair criticism herself. The golfer and social media influencer shared her support for the top draft prospect and her thoughts on the recent criticism on X.

“The hate towards Caitlin Clark from current and former players is disappointing but not surprising,” Spiranac wrote. “Women can be absolutely vicious to other women while also preaching empowering the next generation. I’ve seen it firsthand but we must remember a rising tide lifts all boats.”

Clark, for her part, has managed to brush off any negative attention that’s come her way. For now, she’s focused on the WNBA draft on April 15 and possibly taking Ice Cube up on a $5 million offer.

In her latest Instagram video released Monday, Paigeviews, still the world’s No. 1 ranked golf influencer, according to the OutKick Culture Department, confirmed that she’s going for a new look in 2024. “Changed my hair color and wearing a lot less makeup than normal,” the 31-year-old Spiranac, who is celebrating her birthday today, announced. “Going for a more natural look,” she added.

“Course management,” Paige explained. “People are losing so many shots to poor course management.”

Paige’s tips:

1. If you hit a draw, tee up on the left side of the box.

2. If you hit a fade, tee up on the right side of the box.

3. Par 5 management: If you can’t reach in two, then lay up to a comfortable yardage for your 3rd shot.

4. Play to the center of the green to avoid being short-sided. If you miss a little to the right or left, “you’ll still be fine,” Paigeviews notes.

The Instagram pros crushed Paige for the advice, but there were supporters who keyed in on the new look. “Less makeup looks great on you,” one IG user wrote.

Paigeviews appreciated the kind words.

“Than you so much! I’ve been enjoying the more natural look,” she wrote back.

Meanwhile, professional golfer Chris Kirk, boasting six PGA Tour victories and an average of about 20,000 followers, manages to generate only about $140 to $211 per post, indicating that despite his accolades, his social media presence equates to the same cost as that of a sponsored post by a golf influencer.
