Picture this. You’re enjoying a casual day on the slopes, riding the chair, thinking where to head next.

Then, you spot them: two skiers ripping a groomer under the chairlift like nobody’s business. For a lucky few, this was a reality when Olympic-caliber racers Lindsey Vonn and Ted Ligety met up for a high-speed lap at Deer Valley, Utah, as documented by follow-cam master Luke Bredar.

As you may have heard, Ligety and Von have earned Olympic gold medals in their respective racing disciplines, meaning they know how to really bend a ski.

And, while impressive, the turns showcased here are decidedly casual for these racers—more of a warm-up than an opportunity to actually show off.

The End of An Era: Lindsey Vonn

Even in retirement, though, both racers still find time to prove that they’ve still got it.

Last winter, Vonn dropped a hammer when she became the first woman to ski the imposing Streif racecourse in Kitzbühel, Austria.

And, more recently, Ligety blasted down a NASTAR course at Deer Valley decked out in a Santa Claus costume. Sure, it was no Streif, but I imagine Ligety’s time that day was untouchable.

The start to 2024 wouldn’t feel complete without Lindsey Vonn making an appearance on the sidelines of another sporting event. Though she is no longer competing professionally, she still makes a habit of attending other pro sporting events and supporting fellow athletes, who like her, have dedicated themselves to their sport.

This time, the former professional alpine skier headed to the San Francisco 49ers game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday afternoon. Though the home team lost by one point following a Rams two-point conversion in the fourth quarter, Vonn simply seemed pleased for the chance to attend a game on a beautiful, sunny day in Levi’s Stadium.

She dressed the part expertly, too. The 39-year-old stepped out in a dark wash, flared pair of denim, a tan knit crop top and a stunning caramel-colored wool coat. With a pair of brown pointed-toe boots, she rounded out the outfit that was, in our opinion, one of the best examples of winter sideline style that we’ve seen in recent weeks and months.

“Game day in ☀️ San Fran!!” Vonn enthusiastically captioned a photo she shared on her Instagram from the afternoon outing.

In typical fashion, the trip to California is only the latest stop for Vonn, who has a habit of hopping from place to place—and sporting event to sporting event—throughout the year. Though we’re sure she’s enjoying her time on the West Coast, we are sure to see her back in Colorado soon for some more seasonal skiing.

Skiing is all about finding your balance. As one of the most decorated American skiers of all time, Lindsey Vonn was pretty good at it, racking up three Olympic medals and 13 World Championship medals over the course of her 19-year career. Now that she’s retired, balance is still a goal of hers, but it looks a little different now than when she was racing down mountains.

In 2023, Vonn tells SheKnows, she spent more than 150 days away from home, traveling for work. “And that’s in a lot of different countries, as well,” the Olympic champion-turned-businesswoman says. “I need to be able to balance it better… There’s always going to be work to be had, but it’s a matter of finding time for yourself.”

Relaxation was on the schedule over the holidays at Vonn’s house in Utah, but for the former elite athlete, that doesn’t necessarily mean rotting in her bed every day. Vonn tries to get to the gym “as much as I can,” she says, even if it’s a 10-minute workout in her hotel room while she’s on the road. “That is something that helps me mentally as well as physically,” Vonn explains. “It helps get my equilibrium right when I can get into the gym first thing.”

Unplugging is also key. “Reading a book for 20 minutes or watching my favorite TV show for an hour, just simple things like that where I can just disconnect and recharge,” Vonn explains.

Vonn also tries to get as much sleep as she can. As a longtime sufferer of insomnia, she knows the value of it.

The ski champion began experiencing insomnia after undergoing knee surgery in 2013. She’d torn her ACL and MCL and had “a bunch of fractures,” Vonn remembers. “I was just in a lot of pain.” On top of that, Vonn says, “I knew if I wanted to get back to the Olympics that next winter, that I had to sleep. And the combination of the pressure of sleeping and the pain that I was in just got me in this really bad downward spiral of not sleeping.”

For Vonn, that meant six to seven hours of sleep a night, altogether. For a professional athlete who was used to sleeping nine, 10, or 11 hours every night, plus naps, that wasn’t nearly enough.

“When you’re not sleeping well, you start the day off behind,” Vonn says. “It took me so long to get going in the morning.” She would force herself to do an interval workout on her bike first thing in the morning “just so I could get my brain to function,” Vonn remembers. The insomnia got even worse after Vonn retired in 2019. “I wasn’t physically as active, so I didn’t have that physical tiredness that I would normally get,” she recalls. “My mind was always going and I was anxious.”

Vonn now uses a prescription sleep medication, QUIVIVIQ. She says it helps her “fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer,” and the effect that’s had on her life has been massive. “I wake up and it’s a completely different feeling now than it used to be,” she says. “I don’t feel like I’m already behind the eight ball. I’m ready to conquer the day and that’s what I need. I’m a go-getter, I’m a do-er, and I need sleep to be able to do that.”

Just as important is Vonn’s nightly wind-down routine. When she’s getting ready for bed, she’ll light a candle or, if she’s on the road, use a room scent that helps her feel like she’s at home. She’ll read a book, take her QUIVIVIQ, and finally shut her eyes for the night.

“Everyone wants something magical,” Vonn says of her sleep solutions. “You still need to take care of yourself. You need to have these routines that are gonna help you get in the right state of mind to sleep.”

As an athlete and a self-described “pretty stubborn” person, Vonn thought she could take care of her sleep issues herself. Finally talking to her doctor about it was “the best thing I’ve ever done,” she says, and she recommends anyone else struggling with insomnia or other sleep issues to do the same. “Most people just think not sleeping is OK and it’s just a part of life and we should just deal with it, and it’s absolutely not. It’s not OK.”

Vonn’s goal in sharing her insomnia story is to encourage others to seek help and find their own solution. “Without sleep, you’re not your best self and I definitely wasn’t,” she says. “Definitely life has changed a lot for me now.”

Unexpected turns and revolutionary victories distinguished Lindsey Vonn’s pioneering career in alpine skiing. At the 2010 Winter Olympics, she became the first woman to win a gold medal in downhill skiing. Vonn retired as one of the sport’s icons after winning 82 World Cup championships. Aside from her athletic skills, her ambitious personality made her a darling among sports businesses, resulting in unique partnerships and tailored collections. She recently took solace because timeless movie star Rebel Wilson nestled her in a catamaran of love and kindness.

Lindsey’s influence beyond the slopes is well-liked by many cross industry personalities. Vonn gifted a specially curated collection to her friend Rebel Wilson, who thanked the Olympian with a sweet update. It’s heartwarming stuff like this we live for.

Lindsey Vonn shares collection with Rebel Wilson
In the latest 2023-24 collection with Head Sportswear, an American-Austrian brand, the 39-year-old former skier created skiwear. The Legacy Line collection promises the perfect blend of sartorial fashion and performance with 1970s elan. Vonn gifted Rebel Wilson the ‘Tiffany Lux Down Ski Jacket’ from the collection recently. Wilson acknowledged the same in her Instagram story with the message, “Thanks @lindseyvonn for sending this new @head_ski jacket.”

Reposting the sweet gesture, Vonn replied, “Of course! Gotta be looking your best on the slopes.” Vonn was named the official brand ambassador for HEAD Sportswear’s skiwear back in 2009, and ever since she’s used the brand’s performance ski clothing. This partnership resulted in the Legacy Line, and back then Vonn stated, “The partnership with the ski clothing division has opened up an entirely new challenge for me in my life and career after ski racing.”

Wilson and Vonn were last seen together on Day one of the 2022 U.S. Open at the USTA in Queens, New York. The star-studded audience brought an additional layer of glitz to the popular tennis event, displaying a perfect combination of athleticism and Hollywood charm. A similar cross-industry intersect is observed when Vonn and Head Sports release their limited edition drop.

The dual-collab with Head Sportswear
HEAD Sportswear introduced a unique and incredibly fashionable cooperation with the Olympian which was available only at Gucci Vault, presented inside the Vault Altitude released in the second week of this year. This partnership combined street style with high-performance features and went on to become a successful hit for the season due to its associated triple impact.

Vonn’s premium Legacy Collection takes inspiration from her hybrid looks for slopes and après-ski, giving designs that confidently blaze a path both on and off the slopes. More collaborations are what we strive to see from Vonn..

Former professional alpine skier Lindsey Vonn had a big year in 2010. Aside from the obvious reasons—a gold medal in the Vancouver Olympics being the biggest, of course—the athlete made a lot of important media appearances that we won’t soon forget.

That year, she made her debut within the pages of the annual SI Swimsuit Issue, posing for a series of photos that were about as stunning as they were fitting. Rather than traveling to white sand beaches of some tropical destination (which she would ultimately make her way to for both her 2016 and 2019 features), Vonn headed to the snowy mountains of Whistler, Canada for her photoshoot. And, like any great creative endeavor, she had props that spoke to her skills.

In addition to donning a series of bright red-and-white bikinis, the 39-year-old trudged around the white hills with a pair of matching skis by her side—the perfect complement to her afternoon on the slopes.

The trip to Canada—though, of course, fantastic in its own right—was also important as a good omen for her coming Olympic appearance. Later that year, she would compete in the Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada. It was there that Vonn won her first and only Olympic gold medal (to which she added a bronze, as well).

But her fantastic year in the North American country started with her SI Swimsuit appearance, and a wonderful one at that. Here are a few of the incredible photos from her trip.
