Former professional alpine skier Lindsey Vonn had a big year in 2010. Aside from the obvious reasons—a gold medal in the Vancouver Olympics being the biggest, of course—the athlete made a lot of important media appearances that we won’t soon forget.

That year, she made her debut within the pages of the annual SI Swimsuit Issue, posing for a series of photos that were about as stunning as they were fitting. Rather than traveling to white sand beaches of some tropical destination (which she would ultimately make her way to for both her 2016 and 2019 features), Vonn headed to the snowy mountains of Whistler, Canada for her photoshoot. And, like any great creative endeavor, she had props that spoke to her skills.

In addition to donning a series of bright red-and-white bikinis, the 39-year-old trudged around the white hills with a pair of matching skis by her side—the perfect complement to her afternoon on the slopes.

The trip to Canada—though, of course, fantastic in its own right—was also important as a good omen for her coming Olympic appearance. Later that year, she would compete in the Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada. It was there that Vonn won her first and only Olympic gold medal (to which she added a bronze, as well).

But her fantastic year in the North American country started with her SI Swimsuit appearance, and a wonderful one at that. Here are a few of the incredible photos from her trip.

Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn is celebrating the Olympics’ potential return to Salt Lake City.

Vonn, 39, shared the news that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has cleared Utah’s capital as a “preferred host” for the 2034 Winter Olympics on Wednesday.

“As Chair of Athlete Experience, it’s an honor and privilege to be a part of this Olympic bid,” the three-time Olympic gold medalist wrote Instagram. “My first Games were in Salt Lake 2002 and it is such a full circle moment to be a part of this incredible campaign. We are almost there guys! 🙏🏻💪🏻🇺🇸.”

The eight-time World Cup champion included a series of photos celebrating the recent “milestone,” including snapshots from the 2002 Olympics. Along with a headshot from her first games, she shared a couple of action shots of her skiing throughout the years.

Vonn also included a collage of photos from her experiences at the 2002 games, 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, the 2010 games in Vancouver and the 2018 games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

In addition to taking her followers down memory lane, Vonn also shared a couple of photos alongside members of the IOC.

The IOC said the French Alps are also being considered to host the 2034 games.

The committee announced that the IOC’s Executive Board and Future Host Commission invited the French National Olympic Committee (CNOSF) and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) for a conversation regarding hosting possibilities on Wednesday.

The IOC also announced that the “Executive Board decided to grant the non-edition-specific project, Switzerland 203x, a special status by inviting it into ‘Privileged Dialogue’ for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games 2038.”

If Salt Lake City is granted the hosting duties, it will become the second U.S. city to host two Winter Olympics. The only U.S. city to host two Winter Games is Lake Placid, New York, which hosted in 1932 and 1980.

Lake Placid and Los Angeles are the only U.S. cities to have hosted any Olympics twice. Los Angeles will host its third Summer Olympic Games in 2028, after the first hosting in 1932 and in 1984.

The U.S. has previously hosted eight Olympic Games. St. Louis and Atlanta hosted the Summer Games in 1904 and 1996, respectively. Squaw Valley, California hosted the 1960 Winter Games.

The 2024 Summer Olympics will take place in Paris from July 26 through Aug. 11.

While former alpine skier Lindsey Vonn has posed for the SI Swimsuit Issue three different times, her debut was back in 2010, when she traveled traveled to Whistler, Canada, for a snowy photoshoot with Warwick Saint.

The athlete, who is a four-time World Cup champion and a three-time Olympic medalist, looked right at home on the slopes in several red-and-white bikinis. Vonn also had the opportunity to pose for Saint’s lens with her skis, bringing the opportunity full-circle. She returned to the fold six years later for a bodypaint feature that took her to Petit St. Vincent, and most recently in 2019, when she modeled for Walter Chin in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Though we never would have guessed it, Vonn revealed to us earlier this year that she wasn’t entirely sure of herself in front of the camera at first, though she’s grown more so as her number of features with the magazine has increased.

“I was actually pretty nervous for my first SI Swimsuit Issue,” she told us this spring. “I wasn’t entirely confident with how I looked at the time. I think being featured in the magazine made me look at myself in a different, more positive light.”

Vonn says stepping in front of an SI Swimsuit photographer’s lens also helped her to be more appreciative of her athletic figure.

“In some ways, it boosted my confidence and made me feel that having a strong and athletic body was not just O.K. but something to be proud of and celebrated,” she stated. “Each issue I was in, I was more and more confident, and it’s amazing to see that transformation in the pictures and in myself.”

Below are a few of our favorite snapshots from her first brand feature, in which her self-assured nature shines through.
