Serena Williams is one of the best professional tennis players the world has ever seen. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champ, who also boasts four gold Olympic medals, announced her retirement last fall in a self-penned Vogue essay, but she hasn’t slowed down at all with other pursuits.

The 41-year-old athlete is also the founder of S Ventures and S by Serena, and will soon be a mom of two. Williams and her husband, Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian, are proud parents to 5-year-old Olympia, and will welcome another baby girl to their family later this year.

While Williams initially announced she was expecting ahead of the Met Gala red carpet in May, she and Ohanian recently had an epic gender reveal party in which they found out the sex of their second baby with a drone light show.

Williams, a three-time SI Swimsuit model, first posed for the publication in 2003 in Miami, then returned to the fold the following year in the same location, where she again worked with photographer Walter Iooss Jr. Her most recent feature with the magazine took place in Turks and Caicos in ’17, when she traveled to the islands to pose for Emmanuelle Hauguel.

Below are six of our favorite photos from Williams’s most recent SI Swimsuit photoshoot that we’re still obsessed with six years later.

Coco Gauff will begin her title defense at the 2024 ASB Classic in Auckland against Claire Liu.

The American youngster enjoyed a career-best season in 2023. She finally claimed her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open with a win over Aryna Sabalenka in the final.

Gauff also won titles in Washington and Cincinnati, as well as here in Auckland. She also reached the semifinals of the WTA Finals and finished the season ranked third in singles and doubles.

Gauff’s partnership with Jessica Pegula continued to blossom as the two won titles in Doha and Miami. They also finished as the runner-ups in Madrid and Rome, and made it to the semifinals of the Australian Open and the French Open.

Gauff won the title in Auckland without dropping a set in 2023. She has been given a rather easy draw, with most of the big names, including Elina Svitolina, Caroline Wozniacki and Emma Raducanu, being on the opposite half of the draw.

Given Gauff’s form and the draw, she’s expected to make another deep run here. With that, here’s a look at the details regarding her upcoming match:

Who is Coco Gauff playing against?

Fellow American Claire Liu will be Gauff’s very first opponent of the new season. The 23-year old California native endured a tough 2023 season and accumulated more losses than wins.

A third round finish at the Miami Open, followed by second round appearances at the Australian Open and the French Open were Liu’s best results at big events. Other than that, a semifinal at the Budapest Grand Prix was the furthest she went in a tournament.

Coco Gauff vs Claire Liu match schedule

The first round contest between Coco Gauff and Claire Liu will take place either on Monday or Tuesday. The exact date and time will be known once the order of play is revealed.

Date: January 1/2, 2024.

Time: TBA.

Emma Raducanu has said her spell out of the sport recovering from injury has “definitely reignited the fire” to compete ahead of her comeback at the ASB Classic in Auckland. The Brit required surgery on her ankle and both of her wrists in May, which left her sidelined for the majority of the 2023 season. She is now set to return in Auckland before attempting to qualify for the Australian Open.

Emma Raducanu: I feel reborn – I'm no longer weighed down by my US Open win

Emma Raducanu believes she is a “better tennis player” now despite being out of action since April as she prepares to make her highly anticipated comeback
The Brit was forced to withdraw from the Madrid Open before her first-round match due to injury and subsequently underwent surgery on her ankle and both of her wrists.
That left Raducanu facing a frustrating spell on the sidelines but having ramped up her training both on the court and off, the 21-year-old believes she is in all-round better shape to return to the tour at the start of the new year.

Physically and tennis-wise in training and in practice over the last few weeks I’m hitting the ball really well,” Raducanu told Sky Sports. “I think I’m a better tennis player than I was actually before the break.
“I think the people around, at the LTA for example everyone can see that I’m training and playing really well.
“Physically, I’m pushing weight, I’m pushing things that I wasn’t pushing before, so I think in my body I actually have confidence in it, which is really nice. And tennis-wise I feel good too.

“It’s just about now putting it into a match, which is obviously completely different to practice. That part I couldn’t really replicate, you could do with sets but it’s never really the same feel.
“I know that will come in time though, as long as the level is there and improving.”

Reignited' Emma Raducanu confident ahead of comeback in Auckland - 'I'm a better tennis player now' - Eurosport

Raducanu admitted there were “a few hiccups” in her recovery but that her time away has “definitely reignited the fire” to compete with the world’s best once again.
The Brit famously came through three qualifying matches en route to lifting the US Open title in 2021, becoming the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam in the Open era.

She faces a similar task if she is to lift the Australian Open, which gets underway on January 14 live on discovery+.
Raducanu isn’t in the main draw but is set to headline the qualifying event, which begins on January 8.
Before all that, though, she will make her first appearance in more than eight months at the star-studded ASB Classic in Auckland.

Reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff is in the field, as are Elina Svitolina and Caroline Wozniacki, but Raducanu insists she is “excited” to take on anyone as she plots her return to the top of the game.
“The field here in Auckland is extremely strong,” she added. “Match-wise it might take a while to just adjust to the feeling of the pre-match nerves or match fitness, tight points, big points, that sort of thing.
“It might take me a while but level-wise I feel really good. So I’m excited to play anyone. It doesn’t matter to me.
“I think the Tour was pretty interesting last year but from what I was told because I didn’t really follow it to be honest.
“Wimbledon was a bit too close for home for me. I had to go there for a few days for some commitments but other than that I stayed far away and the US Open as well.
“So I think I did take my time away but now I feel good, I feel refreshed.”

Serena Williams‘ affinity for fitness is well known. Whether she is in for a workout session or taking mirror selfies afterward, Williams’ sessions in the gym are an important part of her routine. As with most people, Williams too likes to exercise while listening to music. As she finished her latest workout, Williams found herself overtaken by her gym playlist’s incredible quality, which was filled with nostalgia.

The gym playlist in question is her tennis pre-match playlist. As Serena Williams dove into her workout with the playlist, she found herself in the middle of all the memories over the years, the tennis GOAT revealed on X. The pre-match ritual took her back to the time when she dominated the courts.

Nostalgia was not the only thing the playlist brought back. Williams revealed the music got her incredibly pumped for her workout. After all, it is the music she listened to on her path to over 20 career Grand Slam titles!

The pump added to her workout session was only the beginning of the playlist. With it, came back memories of a magnificent career, a grueling climb from juniors all the way to dominating the world of tennis. It became a good time for the WTA veteran to reflect on her time spent as an athlete, something that will always stay with her.

Patrick Mouratoglou has revealed that Coco Gauff left a big impression on him during their first meeting.

Gauff was just ten years old at the time, but Mouratoglou said that he felt like she was destined for greatness.

Coco Gauff US Open

Her drive to succeed was already evident, and Mouratoglou said that she is a rare talent.

“I felt that she was someone so driven, so much confidence in her ability, and that wanted it so much that I felt she had the complete package to reach the top of the game,” Mouratoglou told CNN.

“When she left the office, I told the guys: ‘This one, we take her with us and she can be great’.”

He was stunned by Gauff’s willingness to keep going on the court when other young players faltered.

“The fitness test was incredible for her age,” Mouratoglou added.

“Her competitiveness when it came to playing matches against other players was impressive. She was able to beat players that were technically better than her because of her competitiveness.”

It wasn’t too long until the rest of the tennis world got in on the secret when it came to Gauff.

“Coco has been making history since she was a kid, literally,” said Mouratoglou. “At 13 and a half years old, she was in the finals of the US Open in juniors. At 14, she was winning Roland Garros in juniors.”

He feels that Gauff has been able to cope with the pressure of expectations and is set to be a big force in the game.

“She has learned to deal with [the pressure] at a young age, and that explains partly her ability to win her first grand slam final at only 19 years old,” said Mouratoglou.

“She can still improve so much – which is a good thing, by the way – in many aspects of her game, but I think with her drive, her team, her motivation and her abilities, she definitely can win a few [more majors],” added Mouratoglou.

“Americans say, ‘Sky’s the limit.’ I don’t see any limit and I would not give her any limits.”

Mouratoglou believes that Serena Williams, whom he has coached, and her sister Venus have launched many careers including Gauff’s.

“I think the Williams sisters have inspired a lot of African Americans and Black people in general,” the coach said.

“Before them, very few people of color have been at the top of the game in that sport.

“You feel it’s not a place for you because you don’t see any people that look like you there. And I think Venus and Serena really opened a big gate for people of color in that sport, and that’s amazing.

“When you see someone that looks like you, who is winning grand slams, making history, and there are two of them, you think, ‘maybe it’s possible for me, too.’

“And that’s the inspiration.”

Novak Djokovic said he has no plans to hang up his racket any time soon and, at age 36, is hoping he might be able to emulate American football great Tom Brady by extending his career well past his 40th birthday.

Djokovic

Quarterback Brady played 23 seasons in the National Football League, winning seven Super Bowls with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before finally calling it quits at the age of 45 earlier this year.

“Tom Brady is a great example of a champion in his sport and someone that has had such a great career and longevity,” Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, told reporters in the Saudi capital.

“He has put a lot of hours and a lot of time into self-care, into recovery, into making sure that in a way every aspect of his body and mind is covered so that he can have a long-lasting, successful career.

“I know him personally and I learned a lot from him, from his example, and hopefully I can have a career that goes up to 40 or maybe even beyond — let’s see.”

Brady was in Djokovic’s box at Roland Garros in June to watch his friend win the French Open, one of three Grand Slam trophies the Serbian captured in 2023 along with the Australian and U.S. Open titles.

“I feel great in my own body right now and I’ve been playing some really high-quality tennis,” Djokovic said. “2023 was one of the best seasons I’ve had in my life and why stop while you’re still playing great? So I’ll keep going and take [each] year, one by one, and see how far I go.”

Novak Djokovic

Alcaraz beat the Serbian in a five-set thriller to win this year’s other Grand Slam title at Wimbledon and Djokovic welcomed the rise of the 20-year-old Spaniard, especially as Roger Federer has retired and Rafa Nadal is entering his last season.

Emma Raducanu is reportedly facing the prospect of competing in the Australian Open qualifiers in order to play in next month’s tournament. The Brit is set to make her long-awaited comeback from injury in preparation for the Major, but is holding onto hope of being awarded a last-minute wildcard.

The i claim that Raducanu has requested a wildcard after her special ranking (world No 103) was not enough to qualify her for the main draw, as a result of an injury-ravaged 2023 that saw her spend eight months sidelined following surgeries on both wrists.

But the 21-year-old has not received any indication, positive or negative, as to whether she will receive a wildcard with the tournament two weeks away – leaving her sweating over whether she will need to take part in qualifiers.

Raducanu has been granted a wildcard for the ASB Classic in Auckland next week, where she will make her initial return from injury as he bids to enjoy a healthier 2024.

She is then expected to head to Australia regardless of whether she is given a wildcard and can prepare in Melbourne, or for the qualifiers as she was previously confirmed as one of the entrants for the qualifying draw.

The Brit may have another chance of skipping qualifying should three more players pull out of the tournament through injury, after Caty McNally recently withdrew.

Tennis Australia has already given a wildcard to 2018 champion Caroline Wozniacki, who is coming out of retirement to compete. A further two spots will be handed to French and American players as part of an agreement with their respective opens.

Another wildcard is typically reserved for a player from the Asia-Pacific region, leaving four more for Australian women in their home event.

Raducanu may have hoped for sympathy from the tournament organisers as she makes her comeback from injury, but could instead be forced to go through the qualifiers.

Christmas is officially over, and for those who celebrate the holiday, it was hopefully, full of fun. Tennis star Coco Gauff made sure that she enjoyed herself before getting back on the court in New Zealand and Australia. On Christmas Eve, she attended a Dolphins game at Hard Rock Stadium with her supportive family. The tennis professional shared a gallery of photos and videos of the experience, which looked epic.

After the game, Gauff, who recently visited Disney World, went straight to her suitcase and packed for a big trip to Australia and New Zealand. The athlete will be defending her ASB Classic and aims to take home the Australian Open title.

On Monday, the highest-paid female athlete of 2023, reposted a hilarious meme to her Instagram story apologizing to those she did not text on a Merry Christmas. “If I didn’t text you saying Merry Christmas we still gang I’m just lazy,” it said. Gauff wrote over the pic, “basically packed for 3-4 hours on Christmas day for this Australia/New Zealand trip. Love y’all lol just got lazy,” with a crying face emoji.

This will be the third time the teenager plays the classic in Auckland, New Zealand, and she will defend her 2023 title. The women’s classic will run January 1-7, followed by the men’s tournament from January 8-13

This year, Gauff enters the tournaments as the game’s newest major champion after winning the U.S. Open for her first Grand Slam title. Roberto Bautista Agut recently said that Rafael Nadal would be admired even more by someone who played tennis and knew him, than by people who never played the sport.

Nadal has established himself as one of the sport’s all-time greats with his extraordinary career, that has seen him win 22 Grand Slam titles. That number was a record until it was surpassed by Novak Djokovic, who now has 24.

Bautista Agut, who was asked in an interview whether Djokovic was the best player in history, agreed that the Serb has surpassed Nadal through his numbers. But the 35-year-old also said that while Nadal is admired by everyone, he would be admired even more by a tennis player as they would know the difficulty of what he achieved.

“By numbers Novak surpasses Nadal. He was talking about it with a friend at the gym. Someone who is not a fan or who has never played tennis can admire Rafa, but a tennis player or a friend of his admires him even more because he knows how complex and difficult it is to achieve everything these people have achieved,” Bautista Agut told Marca.

The World No. 57 added that fans may not be aware of the extent of the achievements of Nadal, Djokovic and Roger Federer.

“A fan may have an idea, but he doesn’t know what monstrosities the ‘Big Three’ have done. It is something incredible and out of the ordinary,” Bautista Agut said.

Rafael Nadal is set to return to action at the Brisbane International, which would be his first tournament since the 2023 Australian Open. The 37-year-old is currently ranked 670th in the world.

Rafael Nadal and Roberto Bautista Agut have faced each other thrice so far, with the former leading 3-0 in the head-to-head.

The first meeting between the two came in the semifinals of the 2014 Madrid Open, with Nadal winning 6-4, 6-3. They then locked horns in the fourth round of the 2017 French Open, and the King of Clay triumphed 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. On both these occasions, Nadal went on to win the respective tournaments.

The most recent encounter between the two came in the second round of the 2019 Monte-Carlo Masters, and this time, Nadal won 6-1, 6-1 to reach the third round. He went on to reach the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Fabio Fognini.

The two-time Grand Slam winner, Simona Halep has been up against the wall since October 2022. Her last competitive match was in August last year at the US Open where she saw a surprise defeat to Ukraine’s Daria Snigur in the first round of the event. Talking about events, well, there has been a series of events in Halep’s life after that and her career is now under threat. How?

Recently, she gave an exclusive interview to ‘Paris Match’ where she shed light on the doping incident and proclaimed her innocence. What’s her version of facts and what does she look for in the future?

Simona Halep removes the curtain over the doping saga
The 32-year-old Romanian icon was provisionally suspended from all forms of competition in October 2022 after testing positive for a banned substance (Roxadustat). It is a substance that stimulates the production of hemoglobin and RBC in the blood to treat anemia related to chronic kidney diseases. Then a few months later, Halep was found guilty of a second separate offence by ITIA. It revealed she allegedly had irregularities in her biological passport.

Although Halep tried to prove her innocence several times, in September this year, she was handed a 4-year ban. Halep then appealed to the CAS against the ban. And, a few days back she got her hearing date, which will be in February next year.

Here’s what she said when asked about how all these happened. “My team recommended that I take a food supplement, collagen. I followed their advice and it turned out that the collagen was contaminated with roxadustat. The error comes from the laboratory whose food supplement was contaminated by a doping substance which had no reason to be there,” said Simona Halep.

However, a month back, her coach Patrick Mouratoglou (former coach of Serena Williams) took all the responsibilities of the ongoing doping saga. He admitted that his team had in fact provided the player with the allegedly contaminated collagen supplement. But Halep said her trust is now broken. She added it’ll be difficult for her to believe again in the judgment of her coaching team. What did she say about this?

Halep makes an admission over the ongoing incident
During the interview, the former number one was also asked if she had taken the collagen before. To this, Halep replied, “Never. It was the first time and I didn’t know the brand that was chosen by my team.” Now if the ban stands, she’ll be 35 years old when she’ll finally get the chance to play in competitive events. Will she be able to make a comeback at that age?

Well, the road will surely be difficult and even Halep knows that very well. But has she lost hope? Although she admitted that her career could possibly end if her appeal is unsuccessful. But, she isn’t ready to give up her hopes yet and is currently looking forward to the Paris Olympics in 2024.
